MartyHorse 4 #1 Posted May 27, 2019 Finishing up with going over a nice Onan 220 from a 520H. Serial number is not readable but a stamp under the intake says 1994. Great running motor. Piston, cylinder walls, valves excellent. I have the flywheel off to cleanup underneath. Stator has no problem, just caked with dirt on winddings and steel ring is pretty rusted. Should I replace it or just reinstall it? No evidence of any cracking or damage. Do they go bad? Are the new ones good quality? Should I replace other related parts like the ignition module or timing ring? Again, no indication of a problem or malfunction. -thanks very much.
lynnmor 7,828 #2 Posted May 27, 2019 I wouldn't replace those parts with the exception of the timing ring if it is black in color but you most likely have a good one that is gray. Yes, the ignition module can go bad, but the old one might last longer than a new replacement, just the luck of the draw. I suppose that you did decarbon the heads, replaced the intake valve seals and adjusted the valves?
ericj 1,579 #3 Posted May 28, 2019 I've only found one stator bad on all of the onans that I've owned. It had open winding's when checked with an ohm meter. I have checked the ignition module, before installing the flywheel back on the motor. I just put 12 volts the the coil and hooked the meter up to the negative side off the coil and spun the motor over and watched the voltage drop down to 1 1/2 volts and back up to 12 volts. So I would reuse the stator, almost everyone I've seen has had rust on the metal ring, and if concerned about the ignition module I would check it before installing the flywheel. good luck eric j
ZXT 2,401 #4 Posted May 28, 2019 I would reuse everything that you mentioned if it tests out good. I have no doubt that new (aftermarket especially) parts are of lesser quality. New stuff never seems to last as long as the original IMO.
MartyHorse 4 #5 Posted May 28, 2019 Thanks. Did the decarbon and valve service. Hey guys ... up in Red Lion PA, is there a good garden tractor swap meet/auction/show for Wheel Horse or Cub Cadets coming up? Just a little north of me. -thanks.
