perry 82 #1 Posted June 20, 2007 picked this C-111 up last saturday. i have never seen a 70's WH with a side shaft briggs in it. motor mounts looks factory to me. this tractor is a cross between the C-series and GT models.
nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #2 Posted June 20, 2007 It could very well be factory, the 1979 C-111 had the Briggs 252417-0198-01. The later Work Horse models also had Briggs in them as well. Good find!
perry 82 #3 Posted June 20, 2007 been messin with it this morning and got it running. runs good, no smoke. everything works. deck solid with nice new sharp blades. guess it was worth the $100 i paid for it. i might keep the deck for my B-100 and sell the C-111. as you can see in my other post, i have too many projects and need to make some of my money back. witch deck do you guys like better. side discharge or rear discharge?. not sure if i should keep both decks i have or sell one with this C-111. nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #4 Posted June 20, 2007 $100, you've done good, the deck is worth that much alone. I have both the 42" rear and the 42" side. I think that the side does a slightly better looking job, but the rear is much more handy for cutting in along trees and such. On my rear I have the recycler (mulcher) and it leaves no clippings and that is a bonus as well. So my recommendation is one of each :D
Sparky-(Admin) 23,170 #5 Posted June 27, 2007 As far as using a Briggs motor goes they used em on the "71" 800 Special and autos, the "72" 800 auto, the "78" and "79" C-161 (16hp twin), the 80's GT1100, and the "81 GT2500 which was an anniversary tractor built with the 70's style sheetmetal and an 11hp Briggs(I got one). perry 82 #6 Posted June 27, 2007 so what do you think i have here. a 1978 C-111 ??......
nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #7 Posted June 27, 2007 My guess is a 1979 C111.
Sparky-(Admin) 23,170 #8 Posted June 28, 2007 Yer right Karl. There was only one year for the C-111...1979. Mike....
nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #9 Posted June 28, 2007 I wonder why Wheel Horse used the Briggs engine. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Briggs, in fact I like them, but Wheel Horse was using Kohler's almost exclusively. I know there was a strike at Kohler but that was in the 50's, it lasted for like 4 or 6 years something like that, so that couldn't have anything to do with it. And then I wonder why they only used it for 1 year on the C-111? Not sure...
Rollerman 290 #10 Posted June 28, 2007 Well I mentioned my feeleings about Tuckies...Kinda look at the B&S engines in the same way. I had a GT 2500 as well...with the all aluminium bore.... I have been told differant stories about the B&S engines as well in the horses though. Most say they couldn't handle the loads put on them by the Wheel Horse PTO? I beleive the C111 would have the iron liner in the block so a much better engine than the GT 2500. Another one would be the "SB421"..there is a nice one on ebay right now. perry 82 #11 Posted June 29, 2007 i sure like the kohler's, but i have alot of respect for theese old briggs motors. both of theese simplicitys where half in the grave when i got them. a little points & carb cleaning and theese 2 ol'landlords dont miss a beat. i tell ya, if you guys ever have a chance to grab one of theese old allis/simplicity's dont pass it up. one very nice strong tractor with many heavy duty easy on/off attachments. now my simplicity collection is starting to grow. i have 9 wheel horse's and 4 simplicity's. i now i am a memeber of one of the best clubs on the net. i would still never give up my team of horse's link to simplicity site My Webpage 1965 landlord's check out them solid rod rear lifts. sure beats the cable lift. nylyon-(Admin) 7,882 #12 Posted June 29, 2007 They do look like sturdy machines, I love the dual rear wheels. You're right about the rear hitch pull, WH could have designed I much better especially with the Hydro's they had a lot of potential and didn't follow it up. Nice pictures, thanks. perry 82 #13 Posted June 29, 2007 on the simplicitys they offer a front, center, and rear lift. you can then put on a right lift set up, a left lift set up, and a hydro lift that tucks under the dash and runs off a rear engine pully. this allows you to have idependent lift for 3 different attachments...VERY SWEET.... ive been on a look out for a hydro lift set-up. the right side manual lift is a rare find. uh oh, here i go converting to simplicity..... naw, i grew up on wheel horse. i can have red and orange right?. just as long as there not green. :D

mavfreak 11 #16 Posted November 22, 2010 I have a 78 C161 with a briggs twin. something to watch out for is the pto. Behind the drive pulley there is a bearing that keeps the pto from pushing the drive pulley into the engine and even the crank into the flywheel side main bearing. I believe the c111 have this. You may want to check this. I discovered mine was bad by accident. costly to fix but better to check than it to have destroyed the bearing inside of the engine. If I'm wrong about the c111 haveing this then please someone correct me!

rick 257 #21 Posted November 23, 2010 I use my C-111 for snow plow duty, for what little snow we get here! With weights, chains, and my 265 pounds aboard, I can't complain! When I get the 36" deck fixed, I will pass it down to my daughter in town. There is not enough room in the shed now....
