Picked this up cheap, mostly for parts. Guy's mechanic told him it had a cracked head. It sure did have a cracked head to match the crack across the block. 0525191237b.jpg.935eb16a9603971201534661bf7a1298.jpg0525191237b.jpg.935eb16a9603971201534661bf7a1298.jpgThe poor thing looks like it was sleeved already.  I still came out way ahead for the price. New tires, wheel weights, deck and blade.

Ouch!!

Well..... If you don't have much use for the side cover over the S/G belt lemme know.....

I've got a 12 that's missing one.

Good parts score though!!

Is that a dent in the exhaust valve? It would quite a bit of force to do that much damage.Never seen anything like that either.

I don't think so. It looks like a machined slot.

The darned thing turns over just fine. Valves open great and all.

The mark in the exhaust valve is for identification. Though why I don't know.

I've seen cracked heads and crack blocks, but never a cracked block on an air cooled engine.

That is what I expect to see after the use of starter fluid.

Gasoline in a diesel engine leaves tracks like that.

I think Garry is correct...that is split along the axis that is the weakest, implying an explosion of internal magnitude.  :eusa-think:

Block weakened by the sleeve job?

Looks like a nice tractor other than the engine! I'd find another engine to slap in it and call it a day.

Could be weakened by the sleeve job, that shouldn't have cracked the head i wouldn't think.

If you overheat an air-cooled engine far enough - they will indeed crack, badly.

I wonder if it filled with water and froze solid.

Would an excessive press fit on the sleeve contribute to the block crack?

I too am wondering if too much press on the sleeve. With my eyes I do not see a crack on the

sleeve only on the block. I don't pretend to know what is correct but have dealt with press on

our die casings at work and have seen them split with to much press on them.

I see that 953 nut is confused.

The engine appears that it spent plenty of time outdoors.  If it sat in a way that rain got inside, perhaps from a missing air cleaner, then the cylinder could be filled with water.  If freezing temperatures caused the water to freeze solid, that can break the engine.

I didn't see any rust in the pix!
