1990Onan520-H 15 #1 Posted May 12, 2019 1991 244-H with the 14 horse Onan. Ran great apart from starting. Choke was jammed open. Wouldn't unstick even with my pushing on the plate. I figured oh well its a 91 and probably never had the carb cleaned so I pulled it all apart. Got the choke freed up, pulled the carb apart, all jets out etc. and put it back together. At first I fired it up and it revved through the moon, lucky didn't chuck a rod before I shut it down. It fired right the hell up though that's for sure, choke works great now. In looking it over it seems like the throttle does not return on its own until the linkage spring actually hits it. Is this right? Did I I put a jet back in the wrong place or put something back together wrong? Is it possible to put the float bowl in wrong? I did get it to run at a lower rpm and it spits and sputters horribly. Again, this old girl ran great once running before I pulled it apart to fix the choke. Any ideas? Is it even possible to put jets in wrong?
1990Onan520-H 15 #2 Posted May 13, 2019 Fixed. Incase this helps someone else. The bolts on the top carb plate were loose. I tightened them but apparently not enough. Runs like a top again.
adsm08 3,267 #3 Posted May 13, 2019 That'll do it every time. Can't go letting extra air in or they rev.

Probably the highest rpm the old girl has ever seen. Made some nice loud pops when I shut her down. Sounded cool as hell, but I was quite worried for a split second when she ran away.

At 150K miles I cleaned the throttle body and the computer was compensating for the buildup so bad that it idled at 3000 RPM. I had to dig out the factory manual and find the factory idle set procedure because clearing the computer memory only brought it down to 1500.
