68 commando 8

Spied another wh in need of saving. Owner claims it runs strong and pushes snow wonderfully. From the awful pic from 20 feet away it looks complete and tins are straight. I can get it for $150 without a plow  ( have one already ). Any thoughts on the commando 8 would be appreciated.

Many of us are pretty much enamored with the little Kohler 8.

Without needing to run an Implement it's the favorite engine of mine.

Just a general checking over and when you get it home do all the normal maintenance.

I only use my Commando 8 for putting around shows so I can’t vouch for its plowing or mowing abilities. What I do know is that the short frame machines like the Commando have a nice tight turning radius which would be great for a small yard with lots of obstacles to mow around. As far as plowing snow goes, it’s all about traction and not necessarily horsepower. So with a 42” plow, pair of 50# weights and a set of chains it should plow snow just fine.

Is the commando an attach o matic compatible machine?

That would have the old style mule drive. There's not really a good place to mount the attach-a-matic up front, but you might could fab up a mount for it if you really wanted to.

the last 5-6 years i have been mowing my yard with a 1968 Commando 6 , which i believe is the same thing except with a 6HP Tecumseh engine. with it's 32 inch deck i think  it does a fine job

i know most of you don't like Tecumseh engines , but i have had very good luck with them

I have 2 68 Commandos,  I plow snow with them, use a grader blade and mow. My driveway is 2/10ths of a mile long with a decent hill also. I'm quite impressed with what that tractor does. You can't go wrong, as long as it's in good shape. Easy to work on, very agile, and sips fuel. I'd be all over it if I was you.

My 857 is basically the same tractor. Loaded tires, Frt. And Rear weights a set of reinforced chains and a 48" blade was my plowing machine last winter.

Mike if you had a plow with the two holes on the end one for mid frame and one long that would work? I belive I had a set up like that on my 57`s series.

Yes. I had the long frame plow  with the extra holes to move the rear bar up. Frame sticks out the back a bit but who cares! :occasion-xmas:

I put the 48" plow blade on the short plow frame.  Put the attachment on the tractor and ran it through all actions, works just like it would if it was still the 42" blade.  I'm a happy plow guy. When is it going to snow, I want to try it out for real  :auto-driving:

BTW this is on my '68 Commando 8

I’m prepared, but might weep a bit if I see snow again before fall.
