Interesting observation

We have 6 engines that have had the head off, a K321AQS (Blown), K321AQS (Worn) K301AQS, K321AS (STD), K321AS (.10 over), a Briggs 8hp, and a K161.

2 have burned oil, a K321AS (STD) and the worn K321AQS.

4 have not, the K301AQS, K321AS (.10 over), the Briggs, and the K161.

2 have broken off head bolts.

Can you guess which?

Yeah, the ones that burned oil.

I've noticed they always break the bolts right next to the exhaust.

We've never had a non burner break a head bolt.

It's something about the burning of oil that welds the threads to the block.

I can’t answer your question but I’ve done a few head gasket and that same bolt is the one that has broken off on a few of mine. The latest was a 1981 vintage K321 that was not an oil burner and the other a 1968 vintage K181 that was an oil burner. So I attributed the same bolt snapping on two diff motors to years and years of exhaust heat.

I had the exact problem with my k241. It burned oil quite well and the two bolts straddling the exhaust snapped and had to be drilled out
