Larry Danler 1 #1 Posted April 25, 2019 Hi, I have a Wheel Horse 1967 model 1277 with 12 up kohler engine. I can get it started, then it quickly dies. I have tried adjusting carb and throttle linkage to no avail. Could someone advise how to set carb and throttle linkage? Also what is the story on carbs. I see China ones advertised for $20, but Walbro wants $200 to 250? Do the cheap ones work? What exactly would the procedure be to get this thing running correctly? The engine is a K-301, thanks Larry
WHX?? 51,322 #2 Posted April 25, 2019 (edited) Here's a manual to get you started. Very seldom does the throttle linkage need to be adjusted. Unless someone before has it really messed up. Many of us here use the cheap Chinese one with good results. You do need to make sure the choke orientation is correct when ordering. You will not need a Walbro. It is possible your existing carb may just need to be cleaned. Carburator Reference Manual TP-2377-E.pdf If you don't have the complete engine manual let us know. A good horseman should always have it. Edited April 25, 2019 by WHX22
pacer 3,176 #3 Posted April 25, 2019 It certainly sounds like a fuel problem -- when it starts, quickly squirt some fuel into the carb throat. If it recovers and again runs briefly squirt it again a couple times, if it does fire back up the you will know for certain its a fuel problem. Loosen the fuel line at the carb and see if you are getting fuel there, if not start working back to the tank checking hose, filters, etc. If getting fuel at carb then that is the culprit - stopped up, corrision, etc. As mentioned, many of us are using the import carbs with good results -- but the choke lever on many of them arent compatible with WH. RetroMower 349 #4 Posted April 26, 2019 Sounds like its starved for fuel. Is this a daily use tractor or one just pulled from a barn after sitting for 10 years? Either way if the age of the fuel lines and filter, if it has one, are unknown i would change them not only because its cheap but if the lines are disintegrating you can wager some bits got into the carb requiring removal and cleaning. No amount of adjustments will help
Larry Danler 1 #5 Posted April 27, 2019 . Thanks for the wise replies. I still did not get the answer I am looking for. I have checked, the fuel tank cap, lines, filter. The fuel pump is pumping correctly. Has fire, getting fuel, when it starts and the internal governor moves the throttle linkage, it shuts down. I need someone to explain how the choke, governor and throttle actually work together. ( Example how does one know if attention springs are the correct ones, which hole of the linkage are used and why. Thanks.
Larry Danler 1 #6 Posted April 27, 2019 Anyone have a print copy of how the Koehler carb, choke, throttle linkage and governor work in unison? I think I could solve the problem if I understood how all this works together thanks, again, Larry

Larry Danler 1 #8 Posted April 28, 2019 How does one print just chapter 6 without printing all 126 pages of complete manual? Anyone know where I can purchase a Kohler print manual, of this info, thanks, Larry
wallfish 17,816 #9 Posted April 28, 2019 After clicking print you should see a window open with the print options. Select "pages" and enter the exact pages you wish to print. Only those pages will print
