block cleaning

While I prefer a pressure washer, have any of you found a better way to keep your blocks clean?  I pulled the covers off of my Magnum and while the fins around the cylinders look fine, the both the upper and lower halves look odious.  Lots of oil and dust from fall leaf grinding.  I actually don't think blasting the lower half with the PW will be bad but the upper half has the carb and more wiring and neither of those enjoy lots of H2O.  I thought that the shop vac and a set of scrapers might do the trick but once again I'm looking for suggestions.

Plus if any of you know the secret to getting the flywheel shroud off of the Kohler without removing the intake manifold, please let this ignorant bast__d know as playing Twister with a shroud gets old quick.

Thanks _ Cod

Over the years the external engine gaskets will start to seep oil - that is what you're getting with that constant crud on the outside. If you really want it to stop, order a new set of gaskets, clean that block very thoroughly and install the new gaskets - it won't have that problem again for a long time.

Quick update.  Co-worker recommended air and lent me a long nozzle with small hole on the end.  Cranked the compressor up and it worked great.  In the future I'd suggest a face shield and I ended up with more freckle than I started with but with the help of a toothbrush the dirty deed is done.  I can't now but in the future I'll look into the gasket idea as it makes perfect sense and now that the block is clean it will be easy to figure out.

Thanks again - Cod

Air pressure is good but I would stay clear

of the tender spots . Gaskets and the carb area. Maybe 100 psi
