The Tuul Crib 7,339 #1 Posted April 10, 2019 I’m wanting to know if they made/make a choke cable for a late 60s model tractor. All I can find is an inner wire length of 42 3/4. Any ideas where I can find one or is it hopeless ?
JAinVA 4,637 #2 Posted April 10, 2019 (edited) I would make my own.I just did this on my 312A custom.I would just get a generic choke cable and pull the core.Cut the spiral wrap to length and then insert the core wire and bend the choke end.I need to do the throttle cable as soon as the cable arrives and will post pictures. If there is enough interest I can post a video. Replacing cables is not that hard. If you are comfortable working on 30year old tractors its easy. Edited April 10, 2019 by JAinVA
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #3 Posted April 10, 2019 That is not a problem. I want to keep the old traditional style that came on the tractor. I could go to my local auto parts store and get one . It just wouldn’t look right.
JAinVA 4,637 #4 Posted April 10, 2019 I have no idea what your cable looks like.Would it be possible to post a picture.I am replacing cables that will look stock when I'm done.I would like to see your problem,.Seriously I only want to help.
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #5 Posted April 10, 2019 Ok here is what I have . This was on my 1067 . It had a 10 Tecumseh 10 hp on it . I transplanted a K321 in its place .
JAinVA 4,637 #6 Posted April 10, 2019 That helps a lot.Is this cable plastic wrapped? It would help to see the cable down stream of threaded fitting.Again I am just trying to help.
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #7 Posted April 10, 2019 It’s plastic coated.
JAinVA 4,637 #8 Posted April 10, 2019 That helps. How is the cable retained at the knob end.Is it retained by crimping or some other method?
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #9 Posted April 10, 2019 It’s molded to the end of the cable
JAinVA 4,637 #10 Posted April 10, 2019 My guess is that the metal was crimped to the cable sheath. The only fix for this is to split the crimp at the cable end with something like a Dremel tool and an abrasive disk.Later throttle cables would be source for cores.Unless you can find a direct replacement, you have a chore ahead. My guess is you already know this.Sorry I could not be of more help
Sarge 3,465 #11 Posted April 10, 2019 Those choke cables are available, I can't remember now but think there are some sold on eBay and other places. Just look for any long frame mid 60's tractor, like your 1067, 1277, etc. I do know the replacements are not as good as the originals - especially for the locking throttle cables. It is common that the knob breaks loose easily - I drill them and install a tiny pin. The choke cable isn't a problem since it doesn't have to lock. Might want to look at Lowell's site - he may have them. Sarge

And as far as the throttle cable your so correct on that one . Mine twisted at the knob as well on my 855. I found an old original throttle cable to put back on that one. I may put the new throttle for the choke for now. It goes across where the battery is and to get the battery in and out I’ll have to disconnect the choke cable. Sarge 3,465 #14 Posted April 12, 2019 Looks like all the Chinese built cables now have the stupid choke flap symbol instead of the lettering. I hate how one of their factories makes all the cables the same with no options other than the length overall. Might hunt around some of your local lawn and garden shops, stores and such as they may have one of the older stock universal cables with the lettering instead of the symbol. The older version I used to buy were made in Taiwan and were pretty excellent quality compared to the regular Chinese junk. Sarge
WHX?? 51,781 #15 Posted April 12, 2019 (edited) I use these Cribs http://www.psep.biz/store/toro_mower_cables.htm Always long enough, if not you may not be routing it right? Edited April 12, 2019 by WHX22
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #16 Posted April 12, 2019 42 3/4 is what I have now and I’m going the shortest distance between dash and carb possible. It crosses in front of the battery. Thats no problem till I take the battery out .
