Racinbob 11,938 #1 Posted April 9, 2019 Last summer I put a freshly rebuilt K-341 om my 76. I swapped out the choke shaft to get the proper configuration and sure enough, one of the choke detent balls ran away. Those things make looking for a 1/4" shifter ball seem like a dream. I still had one so I finished the swap and was good to go. Knowing I wanted to rebuild the spare carb I looked for the balls at Ace but they didn't go small enough. Now, after 2 years of constant remodel work, I'm finally to a point where I can play with my tractors again. The only problem is that I don't remember what size the ball was . When it was still fresh in my mind I did fine them on Ebay but just didn't pull the trigger and then I'll have plenty of spares to send to somebody who discovers how easy they are to lose. Can anybody tell me the size of those balls?
ebinmaine 72,725 #2 Posted April 9, 2019 Bob, you give me a few hours and I'll get home and take a look at the old carb that came off my cinnamon horse that was really really really worn out. Maybe I can help you with that one.
pacer 3,177 #3 Posted April 9, 2019 Argh! that dang little ball! it can disappear like magic. I too have been using the - cheap - import carbs, being so cheap I guess they dont come with the correct choke orientation so I remove the shaft from the old carb over to the new one --- and that little ball can disappear quick. But years ago I started saving 'balls' from replaced bearings, using a cutoff wheel to slice the coverings off them. I have a nice little collection of many sizes and in that bunch are the correct size for the choke shaft.

Racinbob 11,938 #6 Posted April 9, 2019 I've done a lot of carb rebuilds and never saw the need to remove the choke shaft until this one came along. Ummmmmm……..to be perfectly honest I didn't know there was a ball in there. That just might have contributed to losing one of them . Hang in there guys. Once I can confirm the size I'll have 100 of them on the way. I think they are 1/8" but...……………. A PM with your address will get some to you. 1
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #7 Posted April 9, 2019 I just recently went thru the same thing . Seems you can’t get the right configuration on the choke set up to work ! i dropped my detent ball a couple of times and was able to retrieve it. In your experience can you find the correct setup? Racinbob 11,938 #8 Posted April 9, 2019 In my situation I needed the choke cable to come up from the bottom. The carb on the fresh engine was set up for the cable to come from the top. The easiest way was to simply swap the choke shaft from the original carb.

The Tuul Crib 7,339 #10 Posted April 9, 2019 While we are on the subject of the choke and balls... anyone know where I can get a longer choke cable? I’ve looked everywhere and all are 42 inches! Been wanting one with a C on it.

Sarge 3,465 #19 Posted April 10, 2019 That is one really off-breed dial caliper - I have never seen that model of Craftsman and it's quite odd how they laid out the dial, interesting for sure. Yup, .125" (1/8") is the diameter here as well. Sarge
