953 Pump Removal

Recommended Posts

T-Mo

If anyone remembers, my "good" 953 has an issue with the lever not operating the pump.  See video below.  I posted this last year and I believe I was told the spring broke inside the pump.  So I need to remove it.  My question is, before I break something, how does the pulley come off the pump.  A puller?  Set screw?  etc.

There should be a set screw holding the pulley on. Spray it down good with penetrating fluid and use a puller to remove the pulley. Here is some very important info. Do not hit the shaft with a hammer unless you have the whole pump taken apart. You will chance damaging one of the gears inside the pump. Don't ask me how I know this.:hide:

953 nut

I have always found that once the set screw is removed the pulley comes right off because the pump seal has leaked enough to prelubricate the shaft.

WHX??

Does the cylinder move when you move the lever T? If so the and the lever doesn't return to neutral yes the spring broke which is the most common. If the cylinder doesn't move then you may have a bad gear like Dan's. The good news and you may already know this is that Lowell has complete kits including the gears.

The latter - the lever moves but there is no movement of the cylinder nor is there any resistance of the lever itself.  Luckily I have another 953 that I could steal the pump from until I get this one fix.

As a note, when you get around to rebuilding that pump. All of the parts are removed from the inside of the pump. There is a snap ring on the out side of the valve drum, remove this and push the drum in. The reason for this note is that there is a slight taper to the valve drum and it will not push out from the inside very easily or without minor damage.
