Docwheelhorse 2,740 #1 Posted March 26, 2019 Hello all, Looked at a small Wheel Horse "collection" tonight and made a good deal with the guy. In the pile is what appears to be a Suburban 400 thats all original and 90% complete... exhaust shield is miising and a few other small things. My question is... while it has the cast iron front axle of a Suburban it also has the 3 piece steel axle tube 4 speed. Is it a very early Suburban or is it an RJ with a conversion front axle? It does have the original Kohler K91 in it. How can I figure out... no S/N label on it. Thanks Tony 1
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,541 #2 Posted March 26, 2019 That is a 1960 suburban with the RJ tranny, In 61' they went to a two piece 3 speed. Hood has the lever throttles instead of push and pull as well.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,532 #3 Posted March 26, 2019 The 1961 401 was the last to use the 3-piece transmission case. Garry 3

Docwheelhorse 2,740 #7 Posted March 27, 2019 Hello all, thanks for info... Ill get pics as soon as I can. As far as cables... they have knobs so maybe arent original. It does have the round plate with on off switch... didnt notice what style recoil it has. Hood hasnt been cut at all... it is dented and gas tank straps are riveted. Tony That would make it a 1961 Suburban if the hood and cables are original.
wallfish 18,244 #9 Posted March 27, 2019 (edited) Sounds like a 61 model 401 Push pull knobs for throttle and choke with the big knock out plug. The pedal should be cast. 1960 had a steel bar pedal and the controls were levers Edited March 27, 2019 by wallfish

Docwheelhorse 2,740 #11 Posted March 27, 2019 Hello All Again---so to tighten it up even more (and perhaps start realising that it has been modified etc... over the years...) This "Suburban" has a K91 in it that apears to be correct color---didn't look at recoil assembly It has the three piece transmission... It has push pull "knob" throttle and choke cables... It has the typical "Firestone Snow Tire" 6-12's and 4.80 / 8 fronts... It has NO FOOT PEDALS---just the 3/4" round bar across it... It has the open front / open rear, sheet metal screwed on panels closed sides mower deck.... No tool box or rear fenders... no exhaust shield.... Hood is dented and gas tank has been riveted in place---but it is not cut or broken at the lower front nose mount Hood has Wheel Horse stamped in it (raised) and painted white Pics to come when I get it home Tony

How is clutch (belt) engaged without a foot pedal on the left side. Many Suburbans have no footrests, but it would have to have a foot pedal (steel on the 1960; cast iron on the 1961). Docwheelhorse 2,740 #13 Posted March 27, 2019 Ooops... thats what I meant but couldn't think of word. It has no FOOTRESTS... there is a pedal but aghain don't know if its the steel one or the cast iron one... Tony
