squonk 43,962 #1 Posted March 26, 2019 I took Skonk out of hibernation the other day and noticed that the play in the front axle seemed more than normal. I keep an extra on the shelf so with a cool day I decided to take a look. Not a bad job to do. about an hr. working at my slow pace.Got under the tractor and noticed the pin moved at the mounting plate so I knew the weld was broken. Pin is worn a little. I have seen them worn almost all the way through. I get it welded back together and keep it for a spare. Couple of jacks make things easy.
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #2 Posted March 26, 2019 Here is what I did to mine. I added a collar on either side and drilled a hole and put grease fittings on it. The pin is just riding in the quarter inch steel and is putting a lot of pressure in that one spot. This spreads it out of course so you have to make a new pin longer. The only problem I had putting get back together was the tire rods had to mount differently.
JAinVA 4,638 #3 Posted March 26, 2019 (edited) This is how I did it on the loader tractor I'm putting together.I chose the 312a frame for this modification because the pin holes were in good shape.I wanted to keep them that way. Adding that plate behind on most Wheel Horses will infer with the steering. There isn't a lot of room for the tie rods. That 520 axle the triangle plate is larger so the tie rods miss the axle. JAinVA 4,638 #5 Posted March 26, 2019 (edited) Agreed the 3/8" plate would hit on most WHs but you could add up to close to 1/4".The tie plate could be bent back a little to provide even more clearance. I remember mocking this up with the interference you mentioned in mind. Thanks for pointing it out. Edited March 26, 2019 by JAinVA

What I did was cut the weld on the plate where the tie rods connect and move it back an inch and rewelded it . All work fine with the steering 2
