Sickle bar or maybe yard art

Recommended Posts

moe1965

I was given this sickle bar yesterday by a friend. He said he had no idea how long it had been on his father's property or what kind of tractor it was hook to but this is what I got. After some research and finding some tags on the bar  it's a sears and robuck. The tractor as well I'm hoping to revive it and put it on one of my wheel horse tractors. From pictures I have found it ran off a drive on the front of the tractor like a mule drive set up. I was hoping that I could put it on my 854 but the drive would be a little different because I'm not aware that a 854 at a mule drive  setup I'm up for the challenge. I got my work cut out for me

i think if i were going to salvage it , i would totally get after lubrication soak , to try and brake down the rust, then i would bench mount it , and attempt to drive it with a separate drive. you might even use a 1/2 " drill to see if it will function after breaking it free. bench ,controlled work is a safer / secure site. pete

Interesting challenge.  Looks like it would be a good candidate for an e-tank

A few years ago I acquired a more modern rusty but functional Sears Sickle bar mower with a pallet of items from a salvage yard.  I thought long and hard of how to put it on a Wheelhorse.  Then I sold it to a Sears collector for good money and bought my C-160

That is an older Suburban or a Custom going by the fenders. The section knives will work on a WH for spares. Honestly the Sears type sickle is a better design then the WH as it doesn't have the wobble box. I've been trying to track one down myself for a future project. They are basic low tolerance units. I had a Jari I literally pulled out of a swamp and broke free with a wrench and bar. Worked slick. I would try and save it. Those units are scarce now.

I'm making some headway on attaching this sears sickle bar to the 854. I got all the parts to move on the sickle bar that should that were out in the elements for 40 years . The next issue was putting a mule drive on the 854. The issue was wheel clearance to the front of the drive when turning the tractor to the left. I made some 1 1/4 spacers to do this the parts in the picture are mocked up for now.

Got the sears  sickle bar mounted today  I made a bracket just like the one on a snow plow to mount it.

Now that is what I call thinking outside the box!     :handgestures-thumbupright:           How is the front of the mower supported?

For now just a temporary flat stock steel to the frame. That's how it was attached to the sears tractor it was on. The bracket I made up under the trans is also set up for a long frame tractor so I can use it on my c 141
