Charger 12 mower deck

Recommended Posts

CC65

I am new to the WH Forum and just acquired my first Wheel Horse. It’s a 1970, Charger 12 automatic. It got it with the 42” mower deck. The tractor and mower deck are in nice running condition. There are ‘parts’ missing however with regard to powering the mower deck. The bottom portion of the PTO lever on the left side should connect to ‘something,’ which it does not. I also believe there is some type of pulley/belt setup (mule drive?) which sends power from the engine to the deck. This is also missing. Can someone help me out with an explanation of how this system works, part names & numbers, etc.? Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Your PTO is all there. All it does is push in on the clutch bell. However, you are missing your mid attachment hitch. Yours would have been the earlier style, with a curved bracket and a V belt pulley on one side. The good news is you have a solid deck, that is correct, with the often broken cast iron tensioner arm. The lift rod simply hooks into your lift bellcrank on the tractor.

This is the only half decent photo I have of that sort of mowing deck, which I have on a 1966 model. It would be nearly identical in operation. Not long after yours was made they switched to the front mounted 'mule drives' which were a bit sturdier and simpler in design.

There's two ways of doing it. You could find a correct earlier mid tach-a-matic bracket and get the old side pulley going. I'm sure a member here might have one for you.
Or B, you could do what many owners back in the day did, and add a front mule drive, eliminating the slightly more complex and fragile side system. Also enables you to use newer decks, though it looks like that will not be an issue as yours is solid.

Regardless, you are missing the mid tach-a-matic hitch which would have simply 'clipped to your deck frame when it was raised. Ingenious and simple design.

I would have to dig around. I converted my 1968 Electro over to a newer bracket specifically so I could use newer decks. I saved that old style bracket for sure, but I might have since given it to someone already. If not I'm sure someone here would have it.

You are quite welcome CC.     With regard to your missing deck drive components, I think you should search for the manual for your tractor and deck to learn the parts and their function.

Also get some info on the newer front mounted mule drive and decide which way you want to go.   Like I stated, I have the parts required for either  set up.

There is a vendor,  A - Z tractor , that will also have the parts required.    His name is Lincoln and he is located  close to you in Richland,  Pa.

While typing, I see Dave has also responded with some great pictures that show the parts and their function  for the original old style side drive system.

Thanks Dave & Ed.  Is there a resource/site for tractor and deck manuals?

Go here for schematics... For the model, just enter CHARGER 12 and a few listings will pop up.  Select 1-0402 and then ASSEMBLY...this will sho schematics.  Go back and select ATTACHMENT / ACCESSORIES and a list of them will appear...then just clik on the RED model # for more schematics.  Yours are getting kinda old and can't guarantee that all will show...but most will.
