Dust Boot Replacement

Recommended Posts

ChrisHill

Like many of you I am preparing my horse for the upcoming mowing season. (Which is a 417-8). As I was adjusting my brake today I noticed that the gear box dust boot is in horrible shape, with cracks and it is busted totally on one side. Is this difficult to change? Any words of advice on changing it? I am going to go order one tomorrow. Also, I have a 1985 417-8, what is the model number? The ones on the tractor have completely wore out. Thanks for all the info!!!!

Unscrew both the hi/lo shift knob and the main shift knob, then remove the four screws/bolts holding down the shift plate and lift it off. Slide your hand under the gas tank and slide the boot up the shifter shaft. Slide the new boot down and tuck the lip of the new boot OVER the shifter set screw at the front (Its also a good time to check to make sure the set screw is tight...) put your shifter plate back on and then the two knobs and go back to work!

Can you all tell me what the part number is for the shifter boot. I have tried using the search feature but I have not been able to find it. My Toro guy is quite a stickler for part numbers. Thanks, Jim

The shifter boot is part 3577 and is still available new from any Toro dealer for about $4.00. That is, of course, unless you want to buy a "NOS, rare" one off Ebay for $12.00 and pay shipping :omg:

Ha! I see people paying over 10 bucks for these on ebay all the time! I replaced mine for $4 and change last fall from a WH dealer.

It's been going on like that for YEARS! Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to look up info on these tractors or know to search for info on the internet before falling to the evils of EBay!!! :omg: j/k The first boot I bought was around $2 and that was years ago!
