gigi 4 #1 Posted March 16, 2019 I'm not sure how else to describe it. Where the hood mounts to the gas tank is apparently by bolts thu the hood and into a tapped holes on the sides of the gas tank. It looks like vibration from the engine is what probably broke off the pieces of aluminum from the tank. Is there a good way to get the hood mounted on. I thought about jb welding a new screw in place but it would probably breal from vibration like the origninal.
wallfish 18,244 #3 Posted March 16, 2019 (edited) EZ out or drill the broken piece out and re-tap the threads. There are quite a few different "EZ out" tools so take a look around and some videos on youtube. Edited March 16, 2019 by wallfish
gigi 4 #4 Posted March 16, 2019 There is no broken piece to remove. I think you are mistaking the impression made by the bolt against the aluminum in the pic as a broken piece of a bolt. The missing piece as shown in the pic appears to be a cover over a hollowed out area where a bolt would pass through a tapped hole to hold the hood in place. I do appreciate your comment though> Thanks.

wallfish 18,244 #6 Posted March 16, 2019 Oh, Now i see. Just looked at it real quick and noticed the circle from the bolt. Someone who can TIG weld those pieces back on or a replacement tank.
WHNJ701 4,165 #7 Posted March 16, 2019 I have same issue on my 854, both sides are broken out the same and missing. I am still trying to figure a solution too
Sarge 3,465 #8 Posted March 16, 2019 A new piece can be welded in there with a Tig and a good operator. Sarge
Pullstart 67,094 #9 Posted March 16, 2019 For the time being, small bungee under the tank? I agree with Sarge, TIG weld a new piece in. The original used Tinnerman clips, they move around a bit in the original hole for some hood to tank fitment wiggle room.
gigi 4 #10 Posted March 16, 2019 It must be a common issue on that type of tank. I've seen tanks for sale on ebay with the same problem. I was thinking about trying the aluminum brazing rods...you heat with propane. Never had too much luck with them. You see folks selling them at car shows and flea markets. They usually demonstrate them on aluminum pop cans...but when you try them on thicker alum. the result isn't as good.
Pullstart 67,094 #11 Posted March 16, 2019 Upon further investigation, I’ve got one side on the tank I’m currently working on that is partially cracked. My next step was to seal it, I believe I’ll weld it up, do a second primer/etcher, then seal it!
gigi 4 #12 Posted March 16, 2019 The problem is it may break again if welded (TIG). And if you go heavy with the weld the hood won't fit properly. I was thinking of somehow using a piece of rubber with a hole through it and a nut with a washer behind it. problem would be securing only the 2 ends of the rubber to the aluminum void , but if done properly the rubber would buffer some of the vibration. gigi 4 #13 Posted March 16, 2019 Does anyone have a pic of what the original hole looks like with the tinnerman clip over it?
WHNJ701 4,165 #14 Posted March 16, 2019 my idea was to just to jb weld tinnerman clip in, or cut a patch piece with a hole and weld a nut onto the back and epoxy it on
gigi 4 #15 Posted March 17, 2019 I'm probably going to go with jb weld 1st. It's the easiest and cheapest way to go. It may hold. Hey, i'm not going to be plowing the north fourty with it. Just ride around the neighborhood.
Pullstart 67,094 #16 Posted March 17, 2019 I showed that crack in my tank to my father in-law tonight, he suggested too long a bolt was likely used to fasten the hood?
AMC RULES 37,211 #17 Posted March 17, 2019 (edited) Can't remember if there is a difference between how the hood mounts to either a 702 or model 653... but will get a pict of my 653's tank for you tomorrow. In the meantime, here's an image from the tank of my 702 to tide you over until then. As far as an epoxy repair goes? I'd recommend this old school, two part product... I can attest from experience... once cured, this stuff is bulletproof. It's claim to fame is that you can drill, sand, and tap it...to effect field expedient repairs to machinery. Pullstart 67,094 #18 Posted March 17, 2019 You suppose Craig, we could fill the entire void, then drill and tap it?
AMC RULES 37,211 #19 Posted March 17, 2019 Sure you could, or I'd simply embed a nut into it before it cures... then, to keep sanding to a minimum just smooth it out with a wetted finger tip like Denny did with his steering wheel repair. 1
gigi 4 #20 Posted March 17, 2019 Ok, I just bought the 1/2 cans off of ebay. 9 bucks. It's worth a try.

Shynon 7,484 #22 Posted March 17, 2019 (edited) I have epoxied these in, just make sure you put some grease on the bolt threads when you align them with the hood so you don't get the bolts epoxied in. Make sure the flange is buried under the epoxy, large end close to the tank Edited March 17, 2019 by Shynon 1
