MattL 14 #1 Posted March 9, 2019 (edited) What do you guys think of this deal? It seems a bit high to me.. When I was younger, my friend and I did a somewhat "restore" on his grandads Wheel Horse mower. Really just a good paint job. I don't know what model it was but it was old. Metal seat old. Anyway, I have always wanted one since then. I would love to know what you guys think of this price, and the model in general. Thanks Edited March 9, 2019 by Sparky Removal of Craigslist link
Ed Kennell 42,225 #2 Posted March 9, 2019 to the Matt. The 314H is a great garden tractor. The 14 HP Kohler Magnum with the Eaton 1100 transmission is a very capable machine that could handle any attachment except a 60" deck. It appears this is a well maintained tractor with many years left. The price is high for my area, but may be fair in your area. Other members closer to you will surely give some advice. The fact is, no new tractor for this price will out perform or out last this tractor. 3
MattL 14 #3 Posted March 9, 2019 Thank you for the info. That's good to hear as I was/am a little skeptical about the hydro trans. And I am banking on that last statement of yours. New mowers in this price range are 88% plastic it seems..
Sparky-(Admin) 23,325 #4 Posted March 9, 2019 Pretty sure that been repainted. I would be skeptical at $1500 and would want to go over it with a fine toothed comb. So here at Red Square we don’t allow posting links to Craigslist, Ebay, auctions etc. I removed your Craigslist link but added a few pics to your post of the 314H.
Ed Kennell 42,225 #5 Posted March 9, 2019 The Eaton 1100s are strong hydros, but they do have a quirky warm up. In cold weather, some require as much as a 10 minute warm up before the lift will operate. I have four tractors with this hydro and some lift immediately and some require the warm up. Toro actually recommends a 10 minute warm up on all of them.

oliver2-44 10,784 #7 Posted March 9, 2019 Sure looks like a rattle can paint job. Even in Texas where WH are somewhat scarce that price tag should be a mint condition tractor.

Aldon 4,828 #9 Posted March 9, 2019 Personally i’d Pass. For reasons already mentioned mostly. But also I don’t prefer the column tranny control. I had one and if I were buying one again it would be a Kohler 16hp hydro or more, or i’d Look for 8 speed.
Skipper 1,789 #10 Posted March 9, 2019 (edited) No reason to beat around the bush on this. My little inner perfectionist nerd is screaming: RUN FORREST RUN!!! It looks like a very rough lick of paint, with not much (if any) focus on detail or quality. If that's a pointer to how the mechanical side of thing are, ..................................... In my book, a mint really really nice low hour 314H with perfect original paint and RD deck, can't even come close to that price tag. I know some dream about it, but let's be realistic. Doesn't matter how much of a WH fanatic you are, that thing is very very far from a 1500$ tractor. Looks a lot more like a 500$ worker to me. 1500$ should put you up for some of the nice and rare stuff if that's your thing, or it could put you behind the wheel of something bigger and way more decent than that. SylvanLakeWH 28,644 #11 Posted March 9, 2019 Price is too high in my opinion...

The difference in paint color and attention to detail ( green arrows ) is obvious in the rattle can accusation . I'd offer around 800 beaver pelts if the rest of the machine checked out . As stated above : For 1500 bones , you will get a pile of worthless plastic garbage if you buy a modern "tractor" . Edited March 9, 2019 by Digger
Herder 2,355 #13 Posted March 9, 2019 Agreed, the price is to high for one with a hydro. Hold off some thing more reasonable will turn-up. 14 HP with an 8 speed seems to be less common but more desirable . local to me I could buy a 400 hr. 314-8 for $500. 953 nut 60,402 #14 Posted March 9, 2019 Not sure what part of our state you are in, but here in the mountains there aren't a lot of Wheel Horses. Scarcity can command a higher price, but there is a limit to that and I feel the seller is way over the limit on this one. You may want to take a look at it and disregard the awful spray paint job, seeing how well it performs. If it runs well, transmission and lift work smoothly and is in good mechanical condition I would say it is probably worth $ 750 to $ 800. If it has been properly maintained you will be able to get several more decades of use from it.

Of course that is the one place that shouldn't be lubed.
MattL 14 #17 Posted March 9, 2019 Knew you guys would come through! Given all the reasons stated above, I'm going to pass. The little bit of communication between the seller and I has resulted in me thinking he's........a bit crazy. Thanks for all of the replies fellas 4
