drn441 11 #1 Posted March 7, 2019 So I picked up a 616z because i think its cool.. I was told it was garage kept and in working condition before it was run with no oil. I'm not sure if I'm going to try to fix the engine or look for a used engine. Either way does anyone have any info on these? All I've found is that the eaton 7 hydros aren't very good. So far it seems like getting parts will be the hardest part of this project.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,532 #2 Posted March 7, 2019 A search of our files brings up 46 hits on two pages. Look through them all because they are in random order this way. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?&q="616-z"&type=downloads_file&search_and_or=or Garry
Pullstart 67,099 #3 Posted March 7, 2019 With two heads there, I’m assuming it’s a twin? 16 hp vertical shaft I also assume?
drn441 11 #4 Posted March 7, 2019 Yes onan p216v. I pulled the heads and rotated the crank and the pistons did not move. I was hoping to find a rebuild kit for it but no luck so far

ericj 1,579 #6 Posted March 7, 2019 I had one, sold it the other year at the big show. Ran good, one of the trans was a little weaker then the other, causing it to pull to the one side if you kept the sticks even. Had to have one just forward of the other. Main problem with mine was that the deck was screwed up and didn't mow right. Some guys made an offer on it at the end of the show and I took it. Wanted to look into why it didn't mow right but never got a chance. I would like to find a 724Z, it's big brother with a 24 hp onan and a 60" deck. should be able to replace the motor with on off any vertical lawn mower engine with enough power to run your 42" deck. good luck eric j
oliver2-44 10,784 #7 Posted March 8, 2019 The Eaton 7 is a good Hydro for that application. You may read on here where its not preferred for WH tractors. and it doesn't have provision for a hydro lift cylinder. While it's not as beefy as the Eaton 11, you won't be doing ground engaging work with that Z trac.
richmondred01 2,307 #8 Posted March 9, 2019 I had a 616z. They are good running/cutting little machines.
drn441 11 #9 Posted March 10, 2019 Thanks for the comments. I hope the hydros hold up for a while. I've seen a few used engines in the 16 - 20hp range for a few hundred bucks.. I hope to pick one up soon to swap into it.
