I’m yrying figure out what wheel horse tractor I just bought

Recommended Posts

Leo. D

Hello I just bought my first wheel horse tractor and I absolutely fell in love with it. It’s a 1966 856, I love it so much that I found another one and bought it but don’t know what model or year it is. It has a bigger motor and it’s hydraulic, it has close to the same dash as the 856 with the pull knobs for the choke and throttle. If anyone could please help me figure out what year and model it is I would greatly appreciate it.

 Thanks, Leo

:WRS: Leo,

You're going to need to provide a little more information than that for an accurate ID of a tractor. There are quite a few different Wheel Horse models.

Post some good pics. both sides, front, rear ect.  Look for a model # tag which will make it easy.

Guess because of electric PTO an Electro 12.

Get the model number off the data plate under the instrument panel. so we can specify the year. They were made for several years 68-72

Great machines.. i have 2 plus 4 of their close relations Charger12 Charger 10

More guessing.  The coil hanging out the right side suggests this may have been a breakerless ignition that failed and was made into a battery coil set up.  it is not the normal location for a factory coil system.

I can make out "Charger Automatic" on the side decal, and that with the electric clutch and I think I see remains of a SSI coil, I'd say you have a 1969 Electro 12.

:WRS:

Previous owners have made a few changes to it, but overall it is a nice looking :wh:. Could be a Charger with an electric clutch.

Good eyes I didn't see the remains of the Breakerless coil at first. I agree 69 Electro

Thank you all for your expertise insight! I will look for the data plate on the inside of the instrument panel when I get home. I bought the tractor for $500 and I came with a snow blower and a mowing deck. Do you think I got a good deal on it?

Working Electro with deck and blower for 500 I would say good deal!!!

Model number should be 1-7245  (if it is 7235 it is a 1968)

Engine should be spec #47147C Sticker on engine shroud.

Here are my 3 winter horses all Electros or Charger.

The triangular coil feeding the spark plug is the breakerless system. Stepney's sharp eyed coufht that it was still there.  It frequently failed and a regular round battery coil was retrofitted.

Welcome aboard. We are basically neighbors. Great find and great price. Pretty rare to find one of those in this area. Probably the best plow tractor since it has the limited slip differential. I have one here and it is indispensable. If you need help we are close.

I agree, 500 is a good price for that unit, and when you have it all up to snuff it's a hard machine to beat. Even better price if it still retains a slid original deck, and I'm not seeing a front mule setup so most likely it does. I grew up on a '68 model. Been in the family forever. Hydro lift, auto drive, cigar lighter, and when it was new it had chrome hubcaps! Top of the line for the era, next to the GT14 of course. I would like to know why the front lights were deleted and someone stuck frog eyes on..

Thanks again fellas, I’m super new to the wheel horse addiction and addicted I am. I appreciate your support and I can’t wait to bring them to a wheel horse trade show. Are there any suggestions on where to the good shows are?  (Formatiz) where about in New Jersey are you?  Also I would like to know which snow plow to get for my 856? From what I understand there are a lot of different ones and is there a difference between the short frame and long frame plows?  Sorry for asking so many stupid questions. I’m very new to this and I don’t know very much
