pfrederi 18,566 #4 Posted February 8, 2019 Welcome to the world of small engine muffler sticker shock. The last muffler for my old truck was less than that. Used or convert to stack(s)
Sarge 3,464 #5 Posted February 8, 2019 This is the exact reason so many folks are producing custom made mufflers - OEM replacements for many types of engines are so expensive it causes machines to get scrapped. One of the worst out there is the D series tractors - the last NOS muffler I saw on E-Bay went for well over $300 easily. I run a pair of Mr. Kemp's can mufflers for that reason - making the thing into a dual-stack machine was just for fun, although it loves to dot me with carbon and water when the engine isn't fully up to temperature. There are a ton of creative ideas from members on here that have come up with their own solution to replace rotted out exhaust systems on these engines - lots of examples of members specifically dealing with the 520 and it's Onan. JoeM 8,178 #6 Posted February 8, 2019 I build one for a vanguard twin from a long propane can. Spent a lot of time on it, looking at how to make it quiet etc. Came out ok but sounds like a Harley. There is quite a science to mufflers, as I found out. I attached a muffler catalog web address, there is probably nothing there that is a direct replacement but a lot of interesting configurations. http://www.stanleymuffler.com/catalog/Fall2011.aspx#/0/
