i need some wiring help

Recommended Posts

grim

im finally starting to work on the wheel horse . the id # is 61-08k802 . its a 76 b-80 8 speed . problem is the engine shuts off when i engage the mower deck . i unhooked the rod controlling the pto and started the mower deck and engine dies so im thinking it has to be something in the wiring. if i hold the lil metal tab behind the pto lever down it will stay running and the mower deck will run. i know i can rig something up to work but i wanna fix it right . it have some wires ripped apart on the clutch pedal to . the horse runs great . just a couple lil things here and there to fix . my son (4 years old ) ripped the front emblem off today with a pair of pliers . he was fixing it he said lol :omg: . any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

billy

Sounds like you have a safety switch problem or something. Without pictures and a wiring diagram I don't know what to tell you other than that.

Billy,

I have a wiring schematic. Email me if you need it, and I can email it to you in a PDF attachment.

Billy--read your post and was wondering how much play is in your PTO lever? That lever is supported by two bushings (part 7879) and slides through dash stand and is held on by "C"-clip. Notice the washer and shim washer (part 3765) under "C"-clip. Can you move that lever side-to-side in dash stand? If so, that will cause that lever to not apply enough pressure on that metal tab you were holding down to make it work. Those parts are still available new from any Toro dealer if you want to "fix it right" instead of bypassing/cutting wires. You may be able to add a washer under "C"-clip to temporarily make it work but I would bet problem is in worn out bushings. They were brass and after 30+ years are most likely shot.

The wires by clutch pedal are for start safety-switch. By ripped apart, do you mean unhooked? Originally start wire came from harness, connected to wire to switch then wire from switch went to starter solenoid. Was the front emblem the white plastic panel in hood? Still available new (part 7416) for about $17.00. As far as your boy "fixing" things, just try to remember any of the "fixing" you may have done as a kid before you pass any judgement. I know my son got a hold of a paint spray can in my garage and "detailed" a few wheels on one of my cars. When I asked my Dad if I ever did anything like that to him, he just shook his head and laughingly said "you were rotten when you were a kid" Me??? Huh-go figure :omg:

The safety switch on my 77 - C120 is for starting only the PTO has to be off and the clutch depressed. It sounds like you problem is at the clutch. There should be a plastic connector with 2 wires that slides on to the switch at the clutch. Both connectors look the same look as the one behind the PTO if the one on the clutch is broken or missing.

I took mine off last year when I had trouble starting and have not put it back in yet. If it starts that should not be whats causing it to stall when you pull the PTO in gear.

Mind will stall if I'm only running half RPMs. Check the deck and idler pulleys to see if they turn freely.

That switch on the PTO lever is actually a dual-function safety switch if I remember right :omg: I believe it will not "complete" the start curcuit if you try to start with PTO engaged and will also shut the ignition/engine off if PTO is engaged and you are not sitting in seat. The seat safety switch is the two wire plug by seat/fender pan.

The 77 - 120 I have never had a seat safety switch. I don't know what year they started that but it was much later than 1977. It was just for starting only. You can get off with the blades engaged, but it's not a real bright idea.

first off id like to thank u all for the help .

the pto lever feels fine . no movement at all . if i hold the safty tb down behind the pto lever everything works great . the blades turn fine and motor sounds and runs fine. its something in the safty switch or wiring going to it . i could be missing a peice on my pto lever :omg: . i sent u a email rideaway . im gonna take a look at his diagram and see what all wires are cut and not there . i took some pics of it while i was checking the lever .past ,where do u look up your parts ? yes it was the white plastic panel . im thinking about mounting lights in there some how but something nice looking . was there any lights on these from the factory . like a option or something ?

thanks

I have the factory parts manual for tractor. Yes, headlights were a factory option and installed in place of the plastic panel. If you look at your dash panel, should be a spot where toggle switch would have mounted

Ok, curiousity got to me so I walked out and looked at my B-80 which is also a 1976 but shows model 61-08K801. The tab you are pressing is held down when PTO is off. The fact that it starts and runs but dies when released or PTO "on" makes me think it IS the seat safety switch. It is shown in wiring diagram and I looked on mine to confirm they did exist in 1976. Tilt seat forward and look for wiring. If there and hooked up--Does it stall out if your sitting in seat? If not, "problem" solved. If it still stalls, trace wires from seat to connectors and uplug. Install "jumper wire" in connector going to tractor wiring to see if it stay running. If dont see wires going to seat, kneal down behind tractor and look for wires under your rear fenders in between fender brackets/mount. If cut, hook both ends together. If connector is still on end, use a piece of wire as "jumper" (or paperclip to act as "jumper" but dont let touch metal) Let us know what you find

Looks like a good, solid machine, Billy. Nice! :omg:

There was a thread here a short time ago about replacement generic but good quality garden tractor seats being available from some Lowes stores for a ridiculously reasonable price. If I can find it, I'll post the link for you.

EDIT: Found it!
