D250 repower

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if anyone here has ever empowered a d250. Having a conversation with my dad we were thinking of something like an old gm iron duke but I think dimensionally it won’t fit. Just seeing if anyone had attempted a repower and what they used

Seems like a great idea.  But i think you should go diesel.

But where to get one?

I didn't see this but my neighbor saw a Wheel Horse that had a Toyota engine in it. My guess is that it was a D250.

I wonder what the power difference would do, with the iron duke being 85 hp as an example, plus the Renault engine being 3000 rpm and the others spin much higher than that. I’ve seen videos of a Ford 8n with a v8 so anything is doable

My vote would be any industrial engine of the same physical size - they are plentiful and easy to find parts for. Old Continentals, or even Perkins are very compact and very high torque. The limit will be that oddball gears that Gutbrod used in the rear axle - it is a known weak spot in that tractor.

If you do head the way of an automotive engine, keep in mind that most of them don't have a governor.  So for mowing or other variable loads you'll be forever messing with the throttle to keep the engine humming at the desired speed.  Chances are you'll want something out of a mower, generator, compressor, or something that was designed to hold RPM.

Sarge is right about the transmission in the D250.  BE SURE to be vigilant with maintenance on yours...especially if it's a '76.

Something like a 3 cylinder Yanmar Diesel, out of one of the larger GT's, or sub compacts. They can be had for about a grand, and are tailored for the job, and they are extremely durable. :-)
