Tranny transplant....

Recommended Posts

Duff

Hi, Guys,

How much work would it be to transplant an 8-speed tranny out of an '82 C-85 to an '89 312-8? Any clearance issues with the shifters, etc.?

Thanks much!

Duff :omg:

Hey Duff-if your doing this swap on a "complete" tractor, after removing mower deck and sheetmetal to ease swap--I usually do it with a floorjack and block of wood under frame and place some jack stands under floorboard crossbars "just in case" it tries to tip. You have to knock out roll-pin of hi-low shifter to remove it to make it a roll-out/roll-in swap. The "main" shifter can usually stay on by tilting tranny down as you roll it back. I do this with tires mounted--MUCH easier on the back. I also cut the heads off of two longer bolts to act as pilots to help line new one up and get bolts started.

Thanks for the tips, Paul, and the info on the swap, Stephen!

Turns out it's part of a total down-to-the frame rebuild I'm doing, so I'll be able to bolt the bare frame to the tranny, attach front axle, put on wheels all around, then build up from there!

Anybody lifted a Kohler M-12 lately? Darn, those things are beefy!!!!!

Thanks, guys!
