johnnymag3 2,566 #1 Posted October 29, 2018 I am working on a 244H that wont charge.....garage kept, one owner. They are baffled, and I have no idea where to begin on this style tractor. Its the next generation of tractors, and nothing looks familiar. Is there a regulator? Where is it? i thinks its an alternator , I cannot find any info on this darn thang.!!! Thanks as always for your help, it never lets me down. John
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #2 Posted October 29, 2018 Here is an engine service manual Tractor sold 1991-1993 One must also verify the charge current can get to the battery. Garry
WHX?? 51,434 #4 Posted October 30, 2018 Richard's suggestion first and we'll go from ther. Big question tho Johnny how handy are you with a multimeter? If not get handy real quick...you will need it. Most likely the regulator but will need to walk you thru a few things first. Looks like Garry has you covered on the manual ... study it you will need that too.
johnnymag3 2,566 #5 Posted October 30, 2018 I have several DVOM;s, and can use them......my question is, does this have a regulator, or some type of alternator, because I have read conflicting articles abot these weird Toro Power Plus Engines...Thanks again. Is it like all of my other Wheel Horse tractors? as far as the Electrical side? I can easily see that the frame and other components are really cheaply made, and cant compare to the pold models....Thank again
pfrederi 18,566 #6 Posted October 30, 2018 (edited) If you look at the electrical manual Gary provided you can run two quick tests. One is the Alternator (aka Stator) producing 30 volts ac at half throttle It feed the regulator which converts it to DC and charges battery Ar you getting 14 volts or better engine running??? WHX?? 51,434 #7 Posted October 30, 2018 Your Onan has a standard 3 terminal regulator. Outside terms are input from the stator..... center term goes to battery. Should be mounted on the side of the motor if I remember right. 40 volts AC on the outside terms at WOT or around 30 at half. With the engine OFF measure the battery voltage (DC) should have 12.5 to 13 volts with a decent battery. Start the engine and run it up to WOT and should have 13.5 -14.5 volts on the battery. if not read the voltage at the center term. if you have it there might be a wiring issue. in between battery and regulator. You need parts I do have a regulator and stator on the shelf for your motor.

At least it is a an inexpensive easy fix.
