past7971 0 #1 Posted March 16, 2009 A common question seems to be---Is this (enter model) Wheel Horse worth this??? For anyone who's been in this hobby/obsession/addiction for a while, the usual answer after we see pictures is questionable because of what we are used to finding them for. Lately, it seems the going price can be around $500-750 for anything that is usable as purchased. Maybe people have figured the new ones selling for around $1500 that dont last because of plastic, thin stamped metal and non-greasable wear points just aren't worth it when these 10, 20, 30+ years old tractors are still out there going strong. I think the days of finding the decent $300 tractors are numbered and although the "deals" are still out there (Kelly--I'm still jealous over that 854!!!) maybe we arent considering whats out there now for newer guys just getting into them. Also, someone finds a nice one for say $750 that most of us who aren't afraid of getting our hands dirty or working on would shy away from and pick up a cheaper one for $300 to fix up. Well, if we figured our labor/time at even a cheapo $1 an hour and then figured in paint, decals, belts, gaskets, seals and any nuts/bolts/other parts--how much did that tractor really cost? I know I have a few in my garage that the Wife would seriously question my mentality using that formula!!! Of course there are those for sale that are priced in a way that make you wonder if the seller think he has gold. Heres one that I feel represents what used to be a decent used $200-350 "starting point" but priced "slightly" higher http://akroncanton.craigslist.org/grd/1040155441.html and not sure what "fully rebuilt and refurbished" means to this guy but read the ad for this C-100 with starter/generator and fancy new parts http://detroit.craigslist.org/grd/1044947191.html and no picture but I almost stopped breathing over this one http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/grd/1057640514.html I dont know about you guys but I think I'm gonna lock mine up and hire security
Sparky-(Admin) 23,139 #2 Posted March 16, 2009 It would be real interesting to see what these "gems" actually bring the sellers. We had a discussion about the meaning of restored on here awhile back and what it really means. Those tractors you linked arent even close to restored. Mike......... Rideawaysenior 25 #3 Posted March 16, 2009 http://akroncanton.craigslist.org/grd/1040155441.html = CRACK SMOKER http://detroit.craigslist.org/grd/1044947191.html = CRACK SMOKER WITH THE OCCASIONAL USE OF HALLUCINOGENICS. http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/grd/1057640514.html = SNAKE OIL SALES PERSON (what am I getting for my $4,000?) Seriously, all kidding aside, and no offense intended if any of the above posts are from RS members, but what is being asked for these machines is ridiculously off par from what they should be netting. I should say though, that even with the seller offering them at that price, there may be a reason to them as to why they feel they can justify that price, and believe it or not, there are people out there that will pay that amount too. I think many of us would reconsider the amount of tractors we each have if they would bring in that kind of cash. I know I would. Oh, and here are my four smileys
MaineDad 87 #4 Posted March 16, 2009 WOW - those are expensive! I think that most of these people do not do their homework and think the have some great Antique that's worth a lot of money. Maybe we should start our own Antique Wheel Horse Road Show on TV...
Duff 206 #5 Posted March 16, 2009 Jack, I'm squarely with you on this one! Have you noticed, though, the price of machines and parts here in New England is starting to creep upward as well? I've gotten to the point that about the only people I'll deal with are RS members or friends of RS members. I've still got a couple of private sellers I deal with from outside our "family," but only because they've proven themselves to be stand up guys. eBay has become a crap shoot, or more correctly, a farce, for most WH related stuff IMHO.
