ol550 830 #2 Posted March 15, 2009 Carbon dating will not work but if you pull the piston you should be able to count the rings.

Buzz 502 #6 Posted March 16, 2009  My service manual doesn't list the K-90 only the K-91 and ends (or starts) in 1965 also. I'll try and do some digging around.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #7 Posted March 16, 2009 To my knowledge, the K-90 was built from approximately 1951 to 1958 when it was "replaced" by the K-91. (essentially the same engine with a few minor changes and 400 more rpm) I'm not sure if Kohler actually kept a record of production years by serial number prior to 1965 and I have yet to see any corresponding documentation. We recently dated a 1962 K-161RT by comparing it to serial numbers of other known 1962 engines, but since K-90s are quite scarce, it might be tougher to do it that way. Perhaps you could send an e-mail to Kohler - not that anyone there would know, but they might be able to access some records.
formariz 12,040 #8 Posted March 16, 2009 Serial # 274720 Spec #2790B. Thank you. Counting the rings was actually funny.
CasualObserver 3,411 #9 Posted March 16, 2009 Email Kohler, they'll tell you. Might even tell you who they made that spec for. I've asked them about a K-91 before and I got an answer within a day.
Eriks Red horse herd 120 #10 Posted March 17, 2009 I don't know if this will help but ? I was looking through some old kohler catalogs dated 1957 and found some service bulletins dated january 25, 1955. Topic K-90 Design changes. Noticed (changes to motor) serial #s . One specificaly to cylinder heads: states serial # beginning with 275926, cylinder head has been changed from die cast to sand cast. Also serial #s beginning with 286901 have the Phelon flywheel type mageto instead of Bendix-Scintilla Crank-shaft type. Also beginning with serial #231978 new connecting rod design old rod and oil dipper was two seperate pieces, new rod the oil dipper is intergrated into the rod cap. last one dated 1956. Maybe if yours with SERIAL # BEING 274720 in coul fall below 1955 or around 1953-54 could get you within that time frame. This is just some major noticeable dsign changes stated there was lots more stated So if your head on your motor looks alot sharper. then its a die cast, a sand cast would be rougher.( learned that from my tool and die days.) Hope this helped and did'nt make this more complecated.
