551 Question

I have a 551 with a replacement engine, but still a 5.5 Techy. The exhaust pipe is all "wobbly" and wired to the frame. There is a heat shield but it too is floppy.

Does the exhaust pipe get fastened/bolted to the hood stand then run parallel with the hood then a 45* elbow and muffler?

How does the heat shield attach to the exhaust pipe?

The manual would not open up for me...may not even show what I am looking for.

Thank you for any assistance.

You are correct, the pipe should get fastened to the hood stand with the use of a U bolt/small muffler clamp. The shield gets held to the pipe with a clamp that has a nut attached to it. Part #1883

@Achto Thank you.

The starter solenoid is mounted right above where the exhaust pipe will be fastened...My concern was if too much heat would be generated and melt the insulation on the wires.

Where is the solenoid supposed to be mounted?

Not positive, can't seen to find it in the manuals that I have. Could you move it to the inside of the hood stand?  This would put a piece of metal between the exhaust and the solenoid at least.

I also thought about something between the exhaust pipe and the hood stand frame as an "air-gap" too.
