jeepdave 8 #1 Posted September 12, 2018 Once again guys, sorry for the newb question. I am trying to figure out if Grandpa's Charger 12 (1968?) is 6 or 12 volts? I am having a heck of a time finding info on the the thing. Wiring diagrams would be nice too as all of the ignition parts are currently in a box. Thanks again, Dave. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,488 #5 Posted September 12, 2018 Early 1968 production Charger 12's used a belt driven combination starter/generator and battery ignition. Late 1968 production Charger 12's used a Bendix starter and magneto ignition with points and condenser. The tractor model number 1-7231 was used for both. Ignition switches are completely different and the ignition terminal marked M is for magneto ignition and I (eye) for battery ignition. Here is late production info. Click on the photo. jeepdave 8 #6 Posted September 14, 2018 Thanks for the info Garry. Looks pretty straight forward. I'll have to double check what starter/ alternator setup it has, but I want to say option 2 assuming the option 1 combo alternator/ starter doesn't look like the typical starter. pfrederi 17,129 #7 Posted September 14, 2018 Since you are not 100% positive about the specific model number (and year) be aware that over its production life Chargers had 3 different ignition systems (and after 50 years the original system may have been replaced with a different style) Can shaped coil = Battery and points ignition, Triangular Coil Breakerless system no coil Magneto and points.
