Just Piddling 0 #1 Posted March 12, 2009 Hello everyone, I sold my 520 last year to buy a small tractor. The plan was to buy a cheap mower this year for a couple hundred (some sort of MTD). Last night I ran across a Raider 10 on Craigslist being sold with a few JDs for one price. I inquired about just selling the Raider and the response was $200 with deck. Everything is supposed to work fine and they even commented that the paint was faded but not beat up. They are supposed to be emailing pictures. I am not sure what gear box it has, but it has the Tech engine. So according to Toro, this is either a 70 or 71 model, is this right? What does everybody hate about the Tech engines? What is the drawbacks to the Raider 10? Being in NC, there is not alot of options on a cheap WH, so this might be my best chance to stay with WH. Thanks for your help. Teddy da Bear 11 #2 Posted March 12, 2009 I have the 72 Raider 10 but it came with a kohler. Some say the Tecumseh is made too light....and does not produce the power per hp rating that a kohler does. But I had a tecumseh in my Lawn Ranger and it lasted 28 years before carboning up. Enjoy your tecumseh!
Operator 7 #3 Posted March 12, 2009 Lets get back to that first sentence, "You sold your 520" Why? I wouldn't get rid of mine for anything. They are great tractors. Just a little I am working up the nerve to sell a Charger 12. Randy
Just Piddling 0 #4 Posted March 12, 2009 Lets get back to that first sentence, "You sold your 520" Why? I wouldn't get rid of mine for anything. They are great tractors. Just a little I am working up the nerve to sell a Charger 12. Randy I needed a FEL and was going to build one for the 520, but it was an 88 model that was all original. I would have had to modify the front axle along with the steering and just didn't want to screw up a really nice tractor. So I made a deal with the family banker to buy a tractor with FEL if the 520 sold. So now here I am Horseless and looking. I just can't bring myself to buy a cheapo MTD product when I can hopefully find a older horse or maybe even an orange simple mower
past7971 0 #5 Posted March 12, 2009 The Raider 10 SHOULD be a manual transmission with hi-low. Depending on year its referred to either a six-speed or eight-speed. While everyone is well entitled to their own opinions, I myself am not a big fan of the Tecumseh's. The main things you need to be concerned with on that model is the Solid-State ignition which is great when it works but can get costly when it dont and I seem to have fits with carburetors. I have a Raider 10 now that I am ready to "canniblize" for parts because I'm tired of messing with it. Runs great when it wants to but usually have to reset carb screw--want to either idle great or high rev great but not both on same setting. The HH-100 Tecumseh Raider 10 was made from 1969 to 1971. The 1968 is the same but called a Raider 9 and 1972 used Kohlers.
Operator 7 #6 Posted March 12, 2009 OK that is an honest answer. Wasn't there a 520 with a loader on [i hate to say it] E-Bay ? I remember seeing one somewhere. Randy

A whole lotta guys are taking their hats off to you for not messing up a good original tractor! Good luck with your replacement - hope the right Horse comes along for you! Just Piddling 0 #8 Posted March 18, 2009 Well I'm still looking. After they gave me the price and I told them I would take it, they never responded. They then relisted and added a few MTD mowers to go along with the WH and Deeres for $1200. I emailed and asked if it was no longer for sale, nothing . Today there is a listing in another local town for an Antique Raider 10 $500. It may not be the same tractor, but the pictures sure look the same and 2 Raiders within 10 miles is pretty rare down here. I can't fault the guy that bought them, he is just trying to turn a profit, but I hate it when someone backs out of a deal.
