Daron1965 644 #1 Posted August 23, 2018 (edited) 1980 Briggs 11hp starter wont engage flywheel. The starter spins when I apply power to stud, but plastic gear stays in, does not twist out. Starter has orange and yellow wires coming out, but not connected to anything. Do they need hooked up? If so, where. I'm am just learning these engines. KC9KAS 4,744 #2 Posted August 23, 2018 Maybe the starter motor is rotating the wrong direction....this will prevent the starter drive from twisting out to engage the flywheel. Positive & negative wires backwards would do this, OR the wrong direction turning starter motor.
Daron1965 644 #3 Posted August 23, 2018 Doesnt the starter ground via the mounting bolts? And the if I apply power to stud, it should spin correctly????? It did spin correctly a few weeks ago, if that helps... Thank you for your assistance
953 nut 59,351 #4 Posted August 24, 2018 If the starter is spinning in the correct direction then you need a new Bendix Drive. B&S used cheap plastic ones and they are easy to replace.
