ebinmaine 63,137 #1 Posted August 22, 2018 This is one that came out of the many piles of parts that we took home from the auction. It has about a 2 inch bore. It is free and Spins all the way around with no issues. Obviously, no cylinder head on it, or tins. Haven't any idea what it is or how old it is or what brand it is or anything. Just curious...

I didn't get to use it that much as my older brothers had mower duty, Edited August 22, 2018 by pfrederi

Valid point. I've had both from that company. The cheap ones I knew were not going to last and I was okay with that when I bought them so my expectations were low. I have a couple of the old industrial engines around 9 horsepower and the one that's on my honey's 657 temporarily is a 1979 ish 8 horse. That thing runs better now than it has in quite a while and it has a great tone and lots of power. She says "I pop wheelies!" I was what you would call a Briggs guy until these wheel horses introduced me to the Kohler line.
CasualObserver 3,406 #14 Posted August 23, 2018 Nice Eclipse! Have a Parkhound model here myself. I rebuilt a Rocket model exactly like yours for my father in law several years back and man do you have to run to keep up with them! And yes... Those old Briggs run forever. Just clean the points and spark plug, brown paper bag to gap the flywheel and away you go.

Have to be online as we don't have much for shows to go to. I'll do some looking around... Roughly what year is this thing?
Sarge 3,462 #18 Posted August 23, 2018 I grew up using a Suburbanite reel mower with a 3hp Briggs of the same series, if I could find it, I'm sure it's still in running condition today. The old 9hp industrial updraft carb models from the early 50's were a behemoth, worked on one again last year repairing a worn out throttle shaft - this engine has been in use since it was new, still pulls like a mule and despite it's rotating mass isn't too hard to start with the rope. Briggs throughout history has been quietly building some of the best engines out there - for the money I'd almost rather have them than the legendary Kohlers. You really can't beat a Kohler K series, but then again, B&S built competitive engines during the same period that were just as good, but mostly unknown to most of us. rjg854 10,737 #19 Posted August 23, 2018 Wheel horse must have thought a Briggs was a decent engine, because as we all know there are models that use those engines. I have a BR6 B&S engine on my 1947 Bolens Huski Gardener. My Bad Boy zero turn has a 21 hp B&S Professional engine on it, that's 7 years old now and still is in great condition. I've always had good luck with B&S engines
