stevebo-(Moderator) 8,060 #2 Posted March 10, 2009 Is it getting spark? If not then you may have to prime the carb. That happens when you let these sit for a while. Hope you get it running soon. Steve Bo-

WHC-125 4 #4 Posted March 10, 2009 Ben, I hope everything works out and you get her running really soon. Check and see if the fuel filter has gunk in it as well and check the fuel shut off because thier might be something in the line as well.
past7971 0 #5 Posted March 10, 2009 This is that lovely time of the year that cold & moisture with will find any weak link in electrical systems. If the wiring and connections all look clean and tight, check points for corrosion/moisture or might be a faulty safety switch. I haven't dealt with the 300-400-500 series much but imagine they have the switches on the foot pedal, PTO, and seat like I've seen installed on some of the other models. Also have noticed that if they seem to sit for much more than a month or two with todays gas, they will run crappy or not at all. Maybe drop carb fuel bowl to see whats in there and check needle/seat to make sure didnt stick closed. If it sat outside exposed to rain, blowing wind, freezing--check air cleaner. Hopefully be something simple.

Chris, I did everything the Carb and drained out the old Gas from the fuel tank and put into another Gasoline Can wiped it out with Blue Shop Towels , removed the fuel line and blew it out same as the fuel shut off . Teddy da Bear 11 #7 Posted March 10, 2009 Is the starter cranking, but no "pop" to the motor? I would say a safety switch is a likely problem. I found that even when they look good....that is not a certainty. I found once the clutch pedal safety switch bracket came a little loose and was enough it did not get a good enough ground to start the tractor. Keep us posted when it is convenient.... Rideawaysenior 25 #8 Posted March 10, 2009 Ben, I'm in line with Teddy Da Bear. When I had that tractor, there was a problem with the neutral position sensor that if I remember right I bypassed. Not sure if Sparky replaced it or not. It wouldn't supprise me if another safety switch may be causing the problem. Jack

Teddy da Bear 11 #12 Posted March 15, 2009 Ben I'm a little confused. Your two last posts. First one said you replaced the battery and "turns over fine". Second post said same about replacing the battery but I am to now understand that the starter does not engage, therefor it is no longer fine? There is the slim possability that the second battery is weak also. Try an overnight charge or.......jump start it with another running tractor. If it does start with a jump start.....must be another weak battery. If it still does not start.....weak voltage along the way.... Perhaps solenoid? Bad wire to starter? Weak starter spring....etc. Others might have some more ideas.

Mike in MI, I will try another battery from my '73 8 HP 4-Speed that starts up fine I have problems with the 400-Series tractors I don't know why . CHARGER9AUTO 3 #14 Posted March 18, 2009 I put another battery in my 418-A because the old one leaked ACID it turns over the stater but does not fire . The fuel pump is shot I ordered a brand new nylon fuel pump yesterday from my dealer . Ben
Teddy da Bear 11 #15 Posted March 18, 2009 Ok....as I understand you..... You had two problems. Now you have spark.....but no fuel going to the carb. You could get a fuel pump cheaper from NAPA stores and they would likely have it in stock.
