K321 with Mag 12 flywheel... what stator

Recommended Posts

All-

I have a k321 on my puller and I am pretty sure the flywheel is off a magnum 12 or 14. What stator would you put on it? The current one is off the k321 and is not charging proper and we believe it is due to being too small. We believe the flywheel on the magnum is slightly bigger. Does anyone know if a magnum 12 or 14 stator will bolt up to the k series backing plate?

I am glad you asked this question as I'm converting a K to an M.I went out to the shop and compared the ID of both types of flywheels. They are the same.It just so happens that I just installed a stator on an M14 block. With it on the bench both flywheels will mount and clear the stator..I can't remember which series the stator came from but I feel confident they will interchange from series to series.Once I found that the flywheel tapers were the same from each series I just assumed that the rest would interchange. When Kohler went to a magneto ignition system on the M they probably felt it was cheaper to eliminate the cast fins and go with plastic. They reduced parts count by doing away with the coil, points and condenser. My guess is that they didn't mess with the charging system because there would be no cost saving to retool and it worked.Hope this helps.

Jay-

The issue I am having currently is the stator is putting out 7 at idle up to 22 wot. Then when hooking into the voltage regulator it actually shows neg voltage...

That is odd.If you are getting 7to 22 AC that seems OK.The negative is from the DC output from the regulator? If that is the case I would suspect the regulator.

Regulator is new. I tired it with a second regulator and same thing...

What kind of voltage are you getting from the DC side? If it is 8 to 14 volts then it has to be the regulators. Is the regulator the blower housing mount type?If it is then it's just a high capacity diode. If wired wrong from the factory then it would show a negative voltage.

Voltage should be 28-40 volts AC on the stator. Test it unplugged with a lead in each terminal at WOT.

I was able to put some time into pulling the flywheel and found that two of the magnets were missing. I had some off another mag flywheel that I was able to epoxy on and now she charges!! Stator was fine. The motor sounds much different now and runs stronger and crisp. I think the ignition needed the charging system to work proper. I will try and post a video soon.
