310-8 hub removal...

Recommended Posts

EPK

Hello all - I'm new to the world of Wheel Horse, but not to mechanical work in general.

I noticed that one of the axle seals on my 310-8 was leaking, so I obtained the correct SKF seal and figured to be on my way.  I removed the wheel, and then removed the two square headed set screws that are "behind" the hub.  The hub isn't frozen onto the shaft by any means, the years of oil working out of that shaft ensured that - I can move the hub laterally maybe 3/16 of an inch on the axle itself, but something is preventing it from sliding off.  I looked all around for a circlip or something that would be holding it on, and also looked at the exploded drawings, and found nothing of that sort.  I think that the key is probably kind of jacked in there and stopping it somehow - I am going to try to manipulate it (the woodruff key) with a dental pick - just into the keyway in the hub- of course my set of picks is with a bunch of my tools at a different house.  This doesn't seem like a situation in which I need a puller, the hub feels ready to just slide off by hand but then is stopped by.....?

My question is:  Am I missing something embarrassingly obvious?  It seems as though I am, which wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Thanks!

I think you are correct in thinking the woodruff key is turning up and preventing the hub from sliding off.

Do not try to remove the hub by pounding on the inside of the hub.    The axle is only held in the transmission by a C clip and it could easily be broken by pounding on the hub.

Use a puller to push the hub off from the outside end of the axle.

Pictures would be a highly desirable thing. Most of us seem to be about five years old on the inside and we all really like to look at pictures.

Sometimes the Woodruff key is swelled a bit by the set screw which makes it want to stick in the keyway in the hub. Using a puller it should pop right off.

After you get if off, you may want to try the hub on the axle for looseness. You should have to give it a little bump if the fit is right.
