wikket 0 #1 Posted March 2, 2009 Well, I have been searching for my first real WH. I finally found one, great shape C-85 came with plow, mower and wheel horse trailer. One problem though, the engine is done. Need to replace.. I have a question, I currently have a Onan B48 engine, will the B48 fit in the C-85 without major modification? Oh yeah, I didn't know the rear fender is plastic. ( it's currently crack, but I am fixing that with fiberglass. no biggie ) Attached Image

Sparky-(Admin) 23,143 #4 Posted March 2, 2009 Is the Onan B48 a 16hp twin? If so I'm sure it would fit but you would probably have to cut the front of the hood some. And I bet the wiring for the Kohler wont match up to the Onan. Why not look for another 8hp Kohler? Their easy enough to find and it would not reguire you to rewire the whole thing for the Onan. I have a C-85 and it has plenty of power for a 42" plow and the 36" deck I have for it. Not to mention its a real gas sipper . Mike.......
Kelly 1,033 #5 Posted March 2, 2009 Nice find, not sure about putting the onan in with out mods to the hood, you will need a mounting plate to bolt it to the frame like the 520's had then you will have to do some rewiring, and you need to make sure the PTO end of the crank is the right size, where are you located? I have a onan from a 520 you can take measurments off the mounting plate.
wikket 0 #6 Posted March 2, 2009 Thanks for the information, maybe I should try to find a 8hp Kohler first. I would love to have more HP though. It's just this itch to get it running and start riding her. Sounds like all you guys are having fun with the horse.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,529 #7 Posted March 2, 2009 you can put an 8,10,12,14 or 16 hp kolher in there. once you move to the twin kohlers or onan's you are going to need to make changes. stick to the kohlers, they are great. if your could find a 16 hp kohler that would be best. good luck!! WHC-125 4 #8 Posted March 2, 2009 I have had 3- C85, 1- C-125, 1- C-165, 1-C-175, and the wiring is all the same as is the frame and body size(The C-175 has a little different wiring because it has a twin cylinder Kohler, KT17).

iicap 1 #12 Posted March 2, 2009 Nice haul you made, I have a C-81 my son and I use year round between us. Got it with a hole in the block (8HP). Have a C-161 that i borrowed the 16 HP from and put it right in the C-81, that was in 1999. It runs great and this winter it is blowing snow. Oh and also mine had fibreglass fenders too, now has the metal fenders of the 161, but nothing has been thrown away and all will go back where it belongs, someady
Rollerman 290 #13 Posted March 2, 2009 Why not rebuild the K181 Kohler? Parts are readily available OEM or aftermarket & the Kohler small blocks are a pretty good engine to start out with. You have a great resource here if you have any questions. Just curious...what is wrong with your engine....just worn out or major breakage? As mentioned most Kohler single cylinders will fit...the K181 will do A LOT of work for it's horsepower rateing & run forever on a tank of gas. A B48 18HP Onan or K341 16HP Kohler by comparison have a lot of power & torque...but you will be visiting the gas pump a lot more too!
wikket 0 #14 Posted March 3, 2009 I think it's the connecting rod, I will open it up and take some pictures. Also pick up a spare K181 today for $50 dollars. Well I try to place the B48 on the frame( not even close ) need engine mounts. K181 stays on the C-85 - Thanks for all the reply everybody, I will keep you guys posted with some pictures.
