Finally hitched up a tiller that's been sitting around here for a few years. I think it's from an XI and I offered it for sale a while back with no bites so I made a lift bracket and modified the front mount so it would clear the gearbox on a c-series. I don't have a need for it so it's just been sitting under my deck. It still has paint on the tines and it proved this evening that it can turn soil so it can stay. :handgestures-thumbupright:

That's the one I have that came from Jeff Gordon's Power Outlet, Mooresville, NC (outside of Charlotte). Their number was 663-2424. It's a Carolina thing.

Yep I did ... and good grief you have the fuel filter in backwards! If you flip it you can see if chunks of crap are getting in it and time to replace.

Maybe you should stick to tractors that plug in the wall...:scared-shocked:

Now go back and put pics in the rest of your posts so we can see what else is messed up :ychain:

@WHX??

:hide:

I am glad you demanded and looked at the pretty pictures!!! :bow-blue:

I actually sat there and mocked it up correctly to size the line lengths and then promptly put it in backwards...!!! :scared-eek:

You may be right. Maybe at my age I need to stick with an on / off :scared-shocked:switch...:eusa-think:

Mea culpa. There are many curds in your future Uncle Jim!!!

Fixed documentation:

@ineedanother I am not sure if we covered this? But thee Jeff Gordon has or had an outdoor power equipment dealership? And more importantly a Wheel Horse dealership?
Also wanted to note that the belt guard on your tiller is something I wish my tillers had ( I see you have two of them also 😂) since I started using my first one back in 1985 I wanted to make one, because when you till deep the big pulley runs in the dirt. Then the dirt sprays up underneath the tractor sticking to the gas tank and axle or even in your eyes if you are looking back. My guess is that they added the guard for safety, but it also keeps the dirt from flying up.

Yeah, I don't know when or for how long but I believe it's still operating as Lake Norman Power Outlet, a Toro and Stihl dealership. He moved on to selling Chevys in Wilmington. Back when I was fishing a bunch his boat "Pole Position" was docked right across the bridge in Wrightsville Beach. Anyway, I digress...

My older tiller doesn't have that guard and it's definitely factory. I was able to put the belt on with it in place and I don't think there would be any drawbacks to it although I only tested it and didn't run it for more than an hour or so. One could be fabbed up pretty easily I would think.

Belt guard surely added as an h&s requirement and possibly to address government legislation...similar to the fairly ghastly plastic arrangement they invented for the mower drive belt and mule drive. I have heard a rumour that the accessible drive belt was one of the things that killed the conventional horizontal Wheelhorse, the other being noise level. I wear noise cancelling ear defenders for my 518H (which is quiet compared to my C175) but not for 520lxi which is much more refined. As far as I am aware, the belt guard has only been seen on tillers for the 5xi series here in the UK but I have little 3vidence to support this.

When I checked the compatibility chart for this model it was in fact for the xi series which explains to some extent why I had to modify the mounting bracket to work on my c-160.

Nice bit of kit regardless.

What did you do for the mid mount belt tensioner/guide pulley ststem? (Vastly different on the 5xi series of course)

No modification needed. It works with the same belt, I believe 81 1/2" but my memory could be off on the exact length.

I'm puzzled. The 5xi pto is right at the front of the engine just behind the grill and it's a much longer tractor so I'd be very surprised if it was the same belt. There'd need to be some form of mid mount arrangement to change the direction of the belt which is coming in from a completely different direction. The front mule drive has a tensioning arrangement for the mower, so I assume the tiller is similar. I'll look out the 5xi manual and see what I can discover....

Another wicked busy day creating firewood.

I cut a fair amount of 14" sticks this morning then Trina moved a BUNCH of it and a bunch more up to near the splitter.

Same here at 44/5. My job is tiring especially when we’re busy. And I like to be at least moderately busy when I’m home. The 12 miles I’ve walked in the last two days hopefully contributes to me lasting as long as my 90+ year old Grandparents did.

Got the head off and started glassing it after dinner.

Despite what the straight edge says the glass says there is a low spot where the head gasket keeps blowing out. I might need to start with something coarser. The fine-grit I've been using is going through sheets much faster than it is going through head.

I would not advise this for most folks.

I start with something as course as 120 grit.

Don't take much off.

Then go to 220.

Work with this more.

After that anything in the high 300 to 400 ish is a good finish.

You'll easily use up 2 or 3 sheets of the courser paper.

I plane in stages and also a little every day or two.

I find the total time can easily add up to a couple hours or more.

I put  a sticky back 180 grit Da paper on a plate of glass with some Windex and can plane a head in 20 minutes.

We've had very warped heads here.

I tape a piece of paper to steel.

Never seen one done in less than 30 to 40 minutes. BUT.... I have to take very frequent breaks.

It depends how bad they are.

One of the Briggs heads on the GT1600 took just a few minutes but the other had a noticeable wobble so it took much longer.
