1973 Raider 12

We have got a 1973 raider 12 and looking up the transaxle spec on tractor manuals it says it has a limited slip diff , does anybody know what it should feel like when you turn the axles in opposite directions by hand.This one sort of clicks round ,very difficult to describe. Its all smooth when they are going the same direction.

If it's limited slip, and you have the wheels blocked up off the floor, then turning either wheel will result in the other wheel turning the SAME direction. That would indicate a 10 pinion differential.

The standard differential setup (4 or 8 pinion) will result in the wheels moving in opposite directions.

As for sounds or how it feels, I have no idea how to describe them. But what I have listed above is an accurate test of which type differential you have.

Yes its definately a limited slip diff, both wheels turn the same way when one wheel is turned.

Well Chris, it's "limited" slip, which is about as close as you can get and still have a decent differential.

As you said, it's a 10 pinion differential- as opposed to the standard 4 pinion, or the heavy-duty 8 pinion.

Does anybody know what it feels like when you turn the wheels on a limited slip diff in opposite directions ??? :thumbs: We would like to know before the transaxle is assembled back into the tractor Thanks Michael

Hi Michael, your post makes for interesting reading :thumbs:

I have an old trans from a 1971 Raider 10 that sounds lust like yours, the clicking turning different ways and the smoothness turning both the same way.

I thought the trans had..er had it from the clicking noises....

After reading this, I may well be wrong :whistle:

My trans has the bigger 1 1/8 or is it 1 1/4 (cant remember) axles, are your axles the same size?

Dad (fordsonmajortom) will post the axle size, but i think they are the larger size. No real swarf came out when the oil was drained. Heres hoping that all will be well.... it better be i've painted it now! :whistle: :thumbs:

The axle diameter is the larger size 11/8 maybe they are both ok or they are both broken , untill somebody knows what is supposed to happen we won't know untill we try it.

I have ordered some oil seals axle, brake and input shaft . I have ordered some spare ones so if you need any let me know.

Morning Guys.. well I think it's morning, not quite awake yet :whistle:

I did the axle turning test again yesterday just to make sure I had got this Raider trans right in my head.

Yep, it's a 10 pinion diff just like yours :thumbs:

So, how strong are these tran's compared to the the 4 and 8 pinion diff's?

Is it worth sorting this trans out and putting it back into use?

I quite like the idea of having a "limited slip diff" on my 312-8 seeing as it get the most use and abuse :whistle:
