416-8 Sloppy Front end

Recommended Posts

USHorse

Newbie here, with limited hands on experience, but have been riding them for 30+ years.

Picked up a second WH last summer to serve as a backup (good excuse, right?) to my 310-8. I thought the 310 tranny went but ended up a simple fix but only after i bought the 416. The 416 steering wheel has much play in it (more than my 310). Does the "gear" at the end of the steering column ever wear enough that could cause this. BTW, every grease fitting on the tractor was dry. I assume the spindles could be worn as well.

Your thoughts from an experienced pit crew??

First off  , also the gear may be worn, the tie rod ends could be shot, or their is a bushing that goes on the steering shaft that could be worn out as well.

I would like to say again  :horseplay:

IMHO, the clue lies in all the grease fittings being dry. I would guess the play is a combination of things. The gear at the end of the steering shaft may be worn, as may be the fan gear on the shaft that connects forward to the tie rods. And the tie rod ends may be nearing the end of their useful life. If you grab the tie rods, they should move but offer some resistance to twisting. If they don't or if you can shake them with any slop, they're shot. :dunno:

Another thing to check is if you can lift the steering wheel up and down. There's a bushing and retaining collar on the steering shaft that may have worn or loosened up. If this has happened, the gear at the end of the steering shaft can ride up and out of the receiver at the end of the shaft (which could also be worn) and not mesh properly with the fan gear.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 312-8 where all the grease fittings were dry and many things are loose that weren't on a previous 312 of the same age I rebuilt.

All of these parts are still available and worth changing if you find or suspect wear.

Good luck, and  !

Thank you for your helpful replies and welcoming me to the forum. As soon as the 5ft drift of snow & ice allows me to enter into my meager work shed, I am on it!!

BTW, after market tie-rods (stens) show the same part for LH & RH...Wheel Horse OEM have two different part numbers. Does anyone know if they are actually physically different?

The OEM tie rods were different because they were non-adjustable, thus requiring individual left and right hand parts. (and part numbers)

The newest OEM and aftermarket replacement tie rods are adjustable and therefore can be used on either side simply by tuning the ball joint assembly on the end 180

The bore in the steering support that the steering shaft fits in could be wore out .

(oblonged) from lack of grease

and buy the way

Anybody know where to buy new adjustable tie rods for a '68 charger 12?

Am in the UK, so would be handy to find a place that ships them.

Thanks
