953 nut 58,259 #1 Posted October 5, 2017 I live in what could be refereed to as a desert! You just don't generally see any listed for sale within a hundred miles. Low and behold I picked up a 418 C on that was listed as having a bad transmission only four miles from my house. Always wanted a Kohler twin and here I was picking one up in my own back yard. When I picked it up Tuesday I asked about the symptoms and as he described it I told him it was probably just a bad idler that had eaten the belt. I offered to let him back out of the deal but he didn't want to. This morning I had a chance to check it out and sure enough that is what had happened. Last spring I bought a parts tractor from Kyle @fast88pu and as luck would have it the belt and idler from it were in great shape so I didn't even have to leave the shop to pick up parts. The 418 has a great running twin, wheel weights, rear axle bracket for a snow plow, a good 48" SD deck and now I know it also has a good strong Eaton 1100, not too bad for $ 225. The paint and wiring are atrocious, but that will get taken care of in due time. 18

dells68 7,498 #5 Posted October 6, 2017 I kept eyeing that one Richard. I finally decided to pull the trigger the other afternoon and saw it was gone. Kind of figured you might be the seller. Now I'm glad you got it! I was drooling after that twin and was going to put another project. I'm glad you got it. Now, I just want to go for a ride sometime! 2 1

Of course if that isn't the case I have a few more 953s to pick from. The 418 is just going to be a worker for now. 3 3
Ed Kennell 40,689 #7 Posted October 6, 2017 Great save Dick. Is a snow blower and a heated cab coming ? 2

I do plan to add chains, fill the rear tires and mount a snow plow on it. 2

mrc 878 #12 Posted October 9, 2017 hello sir, nice deal! i noticed that the rear of the fender pan seems to be sitting a tad low. generally on the 3,4,500 series wheelhorse tractors the front seat mount cracks/breaks. i know because i have several of these and have repaired a lot of them. can't hurt to check. i will be posting pics soon of my 312 seat mount repair soon. easy fix with my mig welder. hope this helps mike in mass.
19richie66 17,583 #13 Posted October 10, 2017 Great looking specimen you have there. Will you be installing an electric pump on this one like you posted in the electric pump thread? If so, i am interested in how and where you mount it. I put one on mine with a relay but mounted it down by my left foot. Works great. No more turning it over 20 times to get it running.

Very observant! The fender pan is not properly supported. I will be cannibalizing the old 312 that has seen better days and using the fender pan and supports from it. You can count on it! haven't determined where yet, but it will be down low and powered from an accessory circuit with a fuse of it's own. The whole wiring system needs to be replaced at some point, but that will come later.

I made a simple "L"bracket bolted to the frame to keep it low and tied it to the lighting circuit so it will turn on and off with the key. This spring I plan to clean it up and paint it, for now it has become a part of my snow team. 5

Caleb’s newly acquired “JackRabbit” has the same problem. It never ceases to amaze me how badly a person who has little to know background with wiring can BUTCHER a GT harness. Caleb’s is a mess. We will have to start from scratch on that I’m sure! Thanks for the thoughts on the fuel pump setup and location—I’m gonna borrow that idea... 2

BOB ELLISON 2,981 #23 Posted December 23, 2017 Great job Richard I would get a twin if it was in the price range you got. Even though I really don't need one. You deserve that for all the help you give here. I love working on a new old horse like you do. That makes a merry Christmas for you.
richmondred01 2,289 #24 Posted December 23, 2017 My favorite wheel horse is the 418-8. Plenty of power, easy to get parts. I wish they had adjustable valve lifters.
