Big Red Clinton

Hi Guys,

I got my Clinton assembled for the 1054 today. Couldn't start it with a rope. It has a lot more compression than a kohler. If I squirt some starting fluid into the spark plug hole it will fire once. I might take the bowl off of the updraft carb. tomorrow. Do you guys have any suggestions to start it???

Charlie....how about a Kohler pony engine?

Serious though is the big Clinton spun by a starter/generator?...whats it use for a starter?

If it's on the tractor & you have another tractor handy with an open PTO pulley....put them nose to nose, flip the belt "like a figure 8" & try starting it off the other engine.

Hi Guys,

I have nothing against kohlers but I like the clintons. This engine weighs 30 pounds less than a 12 horse kohler and makes about 12 horses. I don't have a starter generator setup but I'll need one to put it on the 1054. I'm going to check the carb float then try starting it by hand again. Thanks for the advice guys!!!

May make a starting fluid injector on the intake manifold.

Look at the pics of it under works in progress named 1054

Well if you have to spin it by hand with a rope to start it...

Can you back the plug out a little....kinda a rigged compression release.

Once it's turning over on it's own snug it back up.

Also is the engine just tight from fresh rings & bore?

The engine turns over fine by hand when the spark plug's out.

I'll give you guys another update tomorrow after I work on it some more.

I'm not touching the starter fluid part, but I would like pics of the hole in the ceiling the spark plug will make.....

:dunno::thumbs::whistle::whistle:

At least that's the kind of luck I have with such things...

Yea I guess I shouldn't try that.

Right now I use Axe Cologne to start the engines if they don't want to. That works well as we also use it in the potato gun

Whatever, I got it running today I had to take the bowl and fix the float because it was stuck. Now I have problems with keeping it running. I think I need a different venturi.
