DwellingBoar

Hello all, I'm new to here. So i don't know quite what to say, so here goes. I'm from BC Canada, and on Saturday i got myself a 1973 Wheel Horse 12 Automatic.

I like it, just working on it so that it'll start up. At first it wasn't getting spark, we got it figured out, it was the points. So yeah, i didn't know where the points were so i took all the shrouds off, and i didn't need to  . But anyways, I'm glad i can be here. Can't wait to get it running. Oh by the way, does anyone know where the release valve is for the transmission, so i can push it around with out popping a hernia?

DwellingBoar .....

The tow valve should be straight back from your left leg as you sit on the tractor.

If you follow the brake rod back along the fender you should see it just above the brake itself.

They are not in the greatest spot to get to......a long flat blade screwdriver works best.

Atleast thats how the 73 Auto's I've had were set up.

Other Sunstrand hydro's you just lift the rear fender & have a T handle faceing up you turn to release.

  Thanks. That will help a lot, thank you very much. As i can see you guys are very knowledgeable. I can't wait to get it running, man it's a heavy sucker. When i got, me and my dad we're going to try to lift it in the back of his truck. He could lift his side, but it was so darn heavy i couldn't get my side up.

DB your still green....wait till you find one that has to be pushed 50 yards to your trailer with loaded tires, wheel weights, & a stuck transmission.

Enjoy the site & explore it.......at the top of the page is a search feature that will lead you to a lot of good info, but can be a little tricky to use.

Again welcome to RS & don't be afraid to ask questions.

The only time I heard the name Wheel Horse spoken up in British Columbia was at the Butchart Gardens just north of Victoria. Are you near Vancover? Take a look to see if there is still any Wheel Horse dealers in your area.

And Welcome to Red Square

Wild Bill in Richmond, Va.

I'd like to add my  and give you a little reading to help you with your tractor. Your 1973 12 Automatic is either model number 1-0460 or 1-0465 depending on what model Sunstrand transmission it has. To see a parts breakdown, what attachments were available, and what features your tractor has go here and enter either model number:

https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?xCaller=Toro

If you want to order a manual plus download several free ones including a transmission manual go here and enter your model number and "none" for serial number:

https://lookup3.toro.com/request/request.cfm

Here's the Kohler engine service manual:

http://www.kohlerengines.com/common/resources/tp_2379.pdf

That should get you started. Anything else just holler........

Sweet. All that info should definitely help. Wow i feel really welcomed here, i can tell you guys are all a nice bunch. So many questions to answer. lol Well i would like to get more of them, once i get this one running, l will probably want more. I'll try and get pictures once it's running. And yeah I'm near Vancouver, I actually live in Port Alberni which is on Vancouver Island, it's about an hours drive away from Nanaimo, and then Vancouver is a 2 hour ferry ride away. And then Victoria is 2 hours and 45 minutes away or so, from Port. Actually we might be getting the WH started tonight, managed to get the points i was looking for at a small engine repair guy in town here, he specializes in small engines and lawn equipment and stuff like that. I'm pretty excited.

Glad your here, DB! That's got to be a real nice tractor. The 12 horse Kohler is real popular and the hydro works nice for mowing. Parts are still pretty available online and from ebay.
