Need to remove 310-8 lift lever spring & spring retainer

Own a 21-10K805, 310-8 Garden Tractor and need to replace the Compression Spring in the lift lever handle.

My problem is  how do you replace the Compression Spring (item #4).

 

Can anyone provide any guidance how to remove the Compression Spring & the Spring retainer (item #3)

If you remove the grip on the tube you should be left with the spring and above that item 5 spirol pin. The pin is shown below the tube on the rod item 2.

Drive the pin out and the spring should come off. It may be a procedure that requires someone to hold a heavy weight against the rod near the pin so the hammer blows on the pin are not wasted. A dedicated pin punch would help.

I have never had to do this so others may have a better idea.
