pfrederi 18,378 #1 Posted August 6, 2017 The fuel shut off valve for Chargers mounts through a hole in the side of the hood stand. Mine is leaking a bit around the valve stem. I have tightened the packing nut as far as it wants to go and it still drips a bit. The only valve stem packing I have found online is either PTFE or Graphite...neither is listed for use with gasoline. Any ideas on what I could use to refresh the packing??? squonk 42,735 #2 Posted August 6, 2017 According to this chart PTFE is gas resistant. https://www.calpaclab.com/teflon-ptfe-compatibility/
pfrederi 18,378 #3 Posted August 6, 2017 Thank you so much. The places I looked showed all sorts of acids oils etc but never mentioned gasoline. I will get some and repack

AMC RULES 37,152 #5 Posted August 6, 2017 I didn't know you could repack it... would've just replaced it. Mind showing us "newbies"... how that gets done Paul?
rmaynard 15,938 #6 Posted August 6, 2017 I'd try re-packing it. At $45.75 plus shipping, those side mount valves are a bit pricey.

Easy project. Open the valve then unscrew the packing hut 7/16". The nut and valve stem will come out as a unit. Hardest part is digging out the old packing. they didn't have teflon 50 years ago it looks like leather. Dental pick, tweezers and very small needle nose dug it out. Wrap the new packing around the stem and press it in. Put the valve back together and tighten the packing nut. You may want to pull it off again and make sure you have enough packing in place, add some if necessary.
