857 14 #1 Posted July 29, 2017 Hi all. I am a new member and wish to make myself known, I live in Sussex in the UK and own a Wheel Horse Model 857 S/N 336561 in most original condition a very nice machine. I needed to fit new front tyres as mine was original Wheel Horse ones and perished, but I was not able to purchase 16x5.50-8 in the UK, I used 16x 6.50-8 still a very good fit. Please could anyone tell me the correct points gap as mine is so small it is difficult to measure it but the engine seems to run o/k. Many thanks Terry
prondzy 3,883 #3 Posted July 29, 2017 16 6.5 8 is the correct tire size for these machines. A new set of points should be gapped at .020 inches. If they are a used set i would set them at .018 inches. (Sorry you will have to convert to metric if your feeler guages dont read SAE)
857 14 #4 Posted July 29, 2017 Thank you Prondzy. The gap on mine is .002 inch you cant see it open but still runs but I will give it the correct .020 makes more sense. My manual dose show 16 x 5.50-8 for the tyres and that is what is on the wheels with the name Wheel Horse on them so a touch confused. Many thanks Terry

Racinbob 11,768 #10 Posted July 29, 2017 Several models in that era used the 5.50-8 fronts. I'm not sure if you can even buy them over here anymore.
