Fuel Pump Necessary?

I have a C-101, and the previous owner added a fuel pump.  The tractor runs fine without switching on the pump.  I recently started talking to a guy about his 310-8.  His fuel pump is bad.  Does the 310-8 even need a fuel pump?  The engine is still a single cylinder Kohler.

I'm not familiar with the 310 but if your tank is above the carburetor it will run by gravity feed.

Fuel tank on a 310 is under the seat, needs a pump for sure.

I wonder if my C-101 pump switch doesn't work the way I thought.  My fuel tank is under the seat on the C-101.

Does is still have the mechanical pump on it?  Maybe it's pumping fuel with the electric one switched off?

You're probably referring to an electric fuel pump that the PO added.   Engines with the fuel tank under the seat often need to be primed if the tractor isn't used often.  The fuel drains back into the tank.   If you use the tractor every week or two, the electric fuel pump probably isn't necessary, as long as the mechanical fuel pump on the engine is working okay.   To answer your question, the C-101 definitely needs a fuel pump of some kind because it is not gravity fed.  

 

An easier option is an in-line hand-primer pump (like used on outboard engines) to get the gas started if it hasn't been used for awhile.   It's too easy to forget to turn off the electric fuel pump, unless it's wired into the ignition switch.

Thank you for the last two posts.  I didn't notice them until today.

I came to the same conclusion.  My C101 has two fuel pumps, so I can switch one off without a problem.  I was able to prime one of them, and away it went!
