Big_Red_Fred 1,548 #1 Posted July 23, 2017 My son went to mow grass today, said starter acting up, found 1 on Ebay, 58 bucks new, is that a good deal ?
N3PUY 1,031 #2 Posted July 23, 2017 (edited) I got a cheap one on eBay for my Onan. It works OK...... but noisy. Remember ... there's more to the starter circuit than just the starter. There's also a solenoid on the frame. Poor battery connection. And it could be a dirty starter drive. Edited July 23, 2017 by N3PUY

Picked up a 416-8 with the onan last year with 200 hr on it, the starter kind of dragged, and spun slowly, checked the battery, it was good. Parked in in the shop. Earlier this year I cleaned all the connections, checked every thing I know how to check, which is very little ( I hate electrical stuff) put a fresh battery in, no change. Took it to my local shop, they sold WHs for 30 plus year. When I picked it up the old guy who worked on it, said it took a while to find the problem, there is a spring behind the dash that holds the PTO lever tight against the safety switch, it was missing, so while the lever was pushing on the safety switch, the starter wasn't always getting the proper voltage sometimes, that's his story and I'm sticking to it. The point to all this is don't assume its the starter.

ohiofarmer 3,379 #5 Posted July 24, 2017 As an Onan owner, it is in all probability just dirt/grease that got hardened around the solenoid helical gear. I would certainly check that before buying another
