No Paint under decals?

Recommended Posts

Noticed something interesting while striping RJ hood using electrolysis. Metal under decals is bright and shiny like it never had any paint at all. Decals also did not have any paint or primer attached to their backs when peeled off.

Wow, that is odd . Are you sure it's not a remnant from the adhesive on the decal? Looks like you have some metal work to repair as well .

No it is absolute clean metal. Looks like there was not even primer. In contrast the metal under original paint was lightly rusted.Strange.

Yes, I have to do a little bodywork. Some dents drilled holes and some pitting through where it attaches to frame along with the usual crack at the tank.

The only thing I can come up with is the steps involved in putting it through finishing . Maybe the original decal had an outside backer/cover layer that was later removed after painting ? Not sure why they would do that , other than speeding up the process and possibly using light heat to cure the paint/adhesive .

I'd love to hear a direct explanation on that one though....

At least it's decent tin to work with , unlike the junk we have now .
