RM-366 mower deck spindle belt replacement advice

Recommended Posts

Mill Rat

Now that I have a complete RM-366 mower deck, I need to replace the dry-rotted spindle belts. It looks like I need to remove spindle spur gears, topside bearing housings, etc. I'm sure I can figure out eventually, but if you have some advice on how to proceed (e.g., you need to remove this first, or you really don't have to remove "x" if you do this), I'd appreciate the guidance.

GET LOTS OF RAGS!!!!! :)

Put on old clothes. Remove blade & blade cup on belt side. Remove gear cover. Remove bolts that hold side gear stand on belt side. Loosen bolts on other stand. Remove bolts on belt side for deck brackets. Loosen bracket bolts on other side. Cut off old belts. Clean hands. Wipe off excessive grease on belt side. Clean hands Remove snap ring on belt side spindle. Clean hands. Let spindle drop below gear. Remove gear, bearings and shims from deck. Clean off more grease and hands. Lift belt side bracket and gear stand and wedge something berween bracket and deck shell to hold gear and stand off of deck. Clean hands and slide new belts under stand and pulleys. Clean hands. Reverse procedure. Blades need to be timed 90 deg. apart. When one blade is straight across the other blade needs to straight front to back. Look at the blades before you take it apart. Clean hands and throw the clothes you were wearing away. :)

Thanks, Squonk. I think just taking off the gear covers put me through a whole t-shirt's worth of rags. At least I know the prior owner didn't starve it for grease. Wouldn't've been worth finding dried-up crusty remnants of grease and have to figure I've got to replace a bunch of bearings and seals.
