Deck Fixing

Recommended Posts

What is the right way to fix the back right hand corner of a deck? I have seen it rust out on all kinds of decks. That is why i kinda perfer rear discharge. On my 1076's both of their decks are rusted out horrible on that spot. Not to mention alot more other place to. Also, the little circular type things that are on the bottom side of the deck. Is it possible to repair and or replace them? Do they sell replacement shells? Well thank you all.

Devin,

Replacements are no longer available unless you come across them

when a collector sells off his stuff or similarly.

I approach any repair the same way. My goal is to restore it in a way

that an average person cannot tell it has been restored.

The kind of deck problem you have (have to assume since I cannot see it)

is the kind you have to cut out the rusted through portions and weld a

piece of sheet metal in it's place. I usually like to weld from the under side.

That way is less conspicuous to the eye. I will even "feather" the edges of

the sheet metal to blend them in. Then on top the thinnest coat of body

filler (tiger hair) sanded and smoothed with consecutively finer grits of sand

paper up to 1000 (for final wet sanding) Then pime and paint.

It is a more detailed process.....but that is it simplified.

Devin,

Regarding the spindles (I believe that is what you are asking about).

These can be purchased used and in some cases new. There are 2-3 main types and a few additional rare types.

In the majority of cases they can be rebuilt. The one type has a long beraring assembly that gets pressed in.

On the older type there removable bearings. A top ball bearing and a lower roller bearing. These are normal generic bearings that can be purchased form a variety of sources.

The first thing to check is if your blades and pulleys are the double D stle or the round hole style.

My Charger deck has a mixture of the cast aluminum ball/roller and the cast Iron long bearing type both with Double D ends.

I try to keep at least one spare rebuilt and ready to go. I have never tried to work on one of the long bearing type- I suspect a press would be needed.

The cast aluminum type are fairly easy to repair. For parts you can shop around or look at the links section - Small Parts, Stock Drive and McMaster Carr are all good potential sources for those parts.

Best of luck

Allright, this is a little off topic  , but it was a pleasure to read your post with proper punctuation and good spelling. Keep it up  !

Good luck with your deck by the way.

Thank you. Mr teddy da bear has been helping me. Umm the thing that i was alking bout that is circular is not the spindles. These are the things that are like the out line of where the blade turns. I think it helps with the suction. The are like half circles. I dont know what they are called?? Well thank you all.

Baffles- just so you know . Those areas are harder to repair, but not impossible . I can cheat, with the tig I can weld up new metal and buff it out to the point that no one can tell it's been welded .

Devin, I think the parts you are referring to are called "baffles". If so, they should be curved sheet metal pieces that seem to enclose parts of the areas where the blades spin. They are put there to increase air flow and direct the grass clippings toward the discharge chute. They are very prone to rusting if a previous owner didn't clean the underside of the deck regularly. My guess is they could be pretty easily fabbed up using sheet metal and welding them to the deck shell if there is enough metal left in the shell itself.

I've read posts about guys who have literally rebuilt deck shells by overlaying or piecing in sheet metal to repair damaged areas, but I'm no metal worker so I can only read and marvel at their skills. Does your school have a metal shop, or do have a friend who knows how to weld?

Devin....

If someday you want to come up here....

I will weld them up if they are fixable.

No charge....you just find the metal to fix them.....

If I can't do it..... I have a friend who can.

If anyone is near MI. I have a pile of nice decks and some that need very minor work, I'd sell them at a fair price, mostly all the newer tac o matic stuff but some older, I'm only keeping a few.
